Melvin Elzinga Obituary
Melvin Elzinga
August 10, 1940 – February 4, 2025
On February 4, 2025, Melvin (Mel) Elzinga, in his 85th year, was called home to be with his dearly loved
Lord and Saviour.
Mel will be deeply missed by Maryanne (nee Vriend), his beloved wife, best friend, and soulmate, for
over 60 years. His children; Laura Veenstra (Gary), Valerie Vanderveen (Phil), Kevin Elzinga (Kyunghye),
and Angela ElzingaCheng (Ben), will forever miss and cherish their dad’s wisdom, his calm strength, his
integrity, and the twinkle in his eyes when he made a particularly clever pun.
Mel took great delight in seeing and spending time with his 13 grandchildren; Michael (Sarah),
Stephanie, Bethany, Danielle (Patrick), James, Elissa (Brad), Erin (Kenton), Shannon (Garrett), Timothy
(May), Nathaniel (Anna), Jacob (Gwen), MeiLing, and Isaiah. He was a proud great-grandpa to 11 great-
grandchildren.
Mel was the son of Melvin† and Anna† Elzinga. He was the dear brother of John† Elzinga (Joan); Ann†
Andree (Andy†); Menno† Elzinga (Fran†), Sylvia† VanderHout (Pieter†) and (Roelie) VanderHout, Jim†
Elzinga (Jane), Gerda Borgdorff (Henk), and Winson† Elzinga (Margaret). He was the dear brother-in-law
of Al† and Betty† Mennega, Arthur† and Nelly Okkema, Harry and Betty† Vriend, Bruce and Willy
Vanderkooi, Bill and Grace VanStaalduinen, and Dave and Joanne Tigchelaar.
Mel felt very privileged to be raised by two wonderful mothers. He lost his mother, Anna, at a young age
and Gertie Visser moved into the household to care for the Elzinga family. Mel treasured his close
relationship with Gertie, visiting her regularly and talking to her weekly on the phone until her passing in
2022.
Mel’s life was enriched by deep and lasting friendships, his church family, colleagues, and the students
he taught during his career as a teacher and principal. He loved to camp and fish, and enjoyed many
trips with Maryanne following his retirement. He will be remembered as a good man with a heart of
gold, and a warm, joy-filled spirit.
Maryanne and family send a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Albright Manor for the wonderful care
Mel received during the last 8 months of his life. We are so grateful to each and every one of you.
