Obituary of Melsa Winger
Melsa Winger
Aug 29, 1943- March 4, 2025
Patricia “Melsa” (nee Gudgeon )Winger passed away peacefully on March 4, 2025, with her family by her side. Melsa joined her late husband, Ross Winger, on his birthday, and we can only imagine they celebrated it together big time.
Melsa is survived by her children, Quint Winger (Kim) of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Jodi Beattie (Scott) of St. Thomas, Ontario. She was a loving grandmother to Tilson Beattie, Ella Winger, Luke Winger, and Karis Beattie. She is survived by her sisters, Sandra Hogg and Lea James and brother-in-law Murray Stewart Winger.
Born in London, Ontario, to Phyllis (Pat) Mills and Ted Gudgeon, Melsa spent her childhood taking the train to Port Stanley Beach. After teachers college, she traveled through Europe, before starting her teaching career instilling a love for reading, music, and learning to her elementary students. Until recent years, former students about town would still tap her on the shoulder and introduce themselves to “Mrs. Winger”, and she would (pretend to) remember them with a smile.
Melsa and Ross built a life she loved on Valerie Street in St. Thomas. She took a pause on teaching to raise Quint and Jodi in a community filled with cherished friends who became family. She enjoyed barbecue cookouts by the pool and was active in the Port Stanley Lioness Club. Melsa loved her travels to Florida, Jamaica, Colorado, Texas, Edmonton, and she and Ross would often talk about their honeymoon train trip across Canada. She was always up for a perch dinner “in Port” or an afternoon of shopping. But most of all she cherished time watching her grandchildren play sports, swim in the pool, and grow up to carry on the Winger family legacy.
Melsa will be dearly missed by family and friends and neighbours. A private celebration of life will be planned in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lioness/Lions of Port Stanley and/or the Kettle Creek Swans would be welcomed.
