Melissa Anderson Obituary
Melissa Grace Anderson (née Carr)
Melissa Anderson, 53, of Saint John died peacefully, Monday, January 20, 2025, at Bobby’s Hospice.
Melissa was born in Saint John to Mary (Hargrove) Carr and the late Mitchell Carr, and grew up in Lorneville. She was a member of the United Church of Canada.
Melissa graduated from Saint John High School, and earned Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy) and Master of Public Administration degrees from Dalhousie University.
Melissa was a true Physiotherapy professional. She worked for 25 years at the Saint John Regional Hospital as clinician, Clinical Practice Leader, and then regional manager of Physiotherapy services. She represented the Physiotherapy profession and services on healthcare committees and in task groups, and served in various leadership positions including President of the New Brunswick Physiotherapy Association. In 2018, Melissa moved to Ottawa to work as Director of Advocacy, Professional Practice and Advancement for the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Even after illness curtailed her career, after decades of dedication to her profession Melissa felt very affirmed in being elected by her professional peers to the Board of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association in 2020. Later in her career, Melissa was a member of the Canadian Society of Association Executives.
Many will remember Melissa combining her love of cooking and her business sense for many years as a successful kitchen consultant for The Pampered Chef.
Melissa was very community minded. Throughout her life she loved to participate in the leadership, operations, fundraising and social activities of church and fraternal organizations in her community. Until her move to Ottawa, Melissa continued to lead and participate in Lorneville United Church Women, and with Saint John Walks.
Melissa greatly loved and dutifully cared for her family. She leaves to mourn her devoted husband Steve Anderson; beloved children Erin Fleet (Alex) of Halifax, Kevin Anderson (Al Thomas-Hall) of Toronto, and Robyn Anderson of Montreal/Barcelona; mother Mary Carr; brother David Carr (Nicole) of Surrey; sister Rev. Jennifer Brown (Rev. Stephen) of Petitcodiac; aunts Pauline Long, Susan Creary (Fred), Connie Richard; mother-in-law Jean Anderson; brothers/sisters-in law Daryl Anderson (Cec Hillier) of Larry’s River, NS, Gail Anderson (Shane Cunningham), Jamie Anderson (Donna) of Newport, NS, Alan Shandro of Sudbury, ON, Wendy Carr, and Silvia Borsic; family-by-heart Lisa Folkins, MacKenzie Briggs, Verna Mills; many nieces and nephews including her nearest and dearest nephew William Brown; countless other cousins and extended family, friends, colleagues, former patients and patients’ families; fur baby Russell the dog.
Melissa was predeceased by her grandparents Gladstone and Valentine Carr, Ronald ‘Buster’ and Grace Hargrove; father Mitchell Carr; aunts and uncles Malcolm ‘Mac’ Long, Norma and Stuart Nason, and Ron Richard.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Melissa’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Bobby’s Hospice, or to the donor’s choice of charity.
At this time the family wishes to express our deep and sincere gratitude to the many – too many to list – that blessed us all with friendship, medical and end of life care, prayers and positive vibes, and all other gestures of love, caring and compassion during Melissa’s cancer journey.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). Melissa’s remains have been cremated. A private family service of remembrance will be held. Visitation and a public celebration of life will take place later in the year, with details to be announced. Interment will be at the Lorneville-Seaview Cemetery, with private service of commitment.
