McMurray, William John ‘Bill’
April 11th 1939 – January 18th 2025
Bill McMurray of Thornbury peacefully passed away after a courageous battle with Cancer. Bill had chosen MAID as treatments were no longer effective and his pain was too much for him to handle. With his family by his side in the comfort of his own home he has been reunited with Elaine.
Bill leaves behind, his son Sean (Jennifer), Granddaughters Grace, Elyse (Honey) and grandson Nicholas (Stephanie) and his beloved Bernese Mountain Dog Dublin.
Bill was born in Kingston, Ontario to Fred and Rena McMurray, after the war his parents moved to Newmarket Ontario. That is where he met the love of his life Elaine. They were married in 1965 and found their way from Toronto to St. Thomas Ontario where he founded the St. Thomas Travel Agency. Their son Sean was born in 1971. Bill enjoyed being a part of the community in St. Thomas and was a proud member of the Kinsmen and Kiwanis, Board member of the YMCA and a proud support of local business as a member of Chamber of Commerce.
After Bill and Elaine retired, they found their way to The Beaver Valley where they lived in the country and enjoyed hiking, Skiing and biking. Bill was a huge advocate for the local section of the Bruce Trail where he and Elaine maintained several key positions locally. If you ran into Bill on the trail, and you were local he had an application in his back pocket for you to be a member of The Beaver Valley Bruce Trail Club. Upon Elaine’s tragic death in 2015 he found himself travelling the world, driving around the summers in his beloved 1976 MGB and shuttling many hikers as a member of the Trail Angel club.
Bill moved to Thornbury to spend more time with his family, as they shared a home where he was well looked after from his son Sean, Daughter in Law Jen and his 2 granddaughters, He loved the time spent with many of the billets from the Meaford Knights and exchange students that came into their home.
