Maureen Ellsworth-Brooks
1940-2025
Maureen hailed from Cape Breton, raised in a coal mining
family. Life was pretty tough so she turned out pretty tough too. She
never liked her name but truly detested the contracted nickname
“Reen” that her family bestowed upon her. When a nun
at school suggested the much more elegant Renné she latched
onto it and it was the only name she would use for the rest of her
life.
To escape the tough mining life in Cape Breton,
Renné left home at 16 to join her sister Lorna in Toronto.
She had jobs in administration, sales and as a rental agent for
apartment buildings. It was there she met her first husband Reuben
MacDougall of Charlottetown and her connection to the Island was
started. Together they had two children – son Dan and
daughter Yvette. The family moved to PEI in 1973 to escape the hustle
and bustle of the big city. On PEI she continued her working career
notably as the Manager for Avon for the province and later in
insurance sales.
Renné and Reuben separated in 1982 and she moved
to Nova Scotia. There she met and married Bernie Brooks to whom she
would remain married until his passing in 2020. In 2022, she moved
back to PEI to be near her daughter Yvette and grand-daughter Kayla.
It was on the Island that she spent her final days.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Dan and Yvette,
Dan’s wife Ailene and their kids Tasha and Jamie, and
Yvette’s daughter Kayla. Renné taught us to laugh
heartily, treasure our independence and love a good card game
(especially Texas Hold ‘Em Poker).
At Renné’s request, there will be no
visitation. She thought it was a morbid practice. We will be a
celebration of life event in May when weather is more amenable to
travel. If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the
Canadian Cancer Society or the Provincial Palliative Care Centre.
