Obituary of Mary Louise Legge
Surrounded by the love of her family, Mary Louise Legge, our cherished mother, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 87 on Sunday, May 11, 2025. Born in Berwick, NS, on February 21, 1938, she was the daughter of the late William and Idella Oickle.
In her youth, Mum attended the Halifax School for the Blind where she made many life-long friends: Edith, Goldie, Barb, and Letitia.
In 1957, Mum married our father, John Legge, and together they raised five children. Her greatest joy was her family, and she took deep pride in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, every one of whom held a special place in her heart.
In 2014, Mum married Harold Mosher, an old friend she had first met over sixty years earlier at the School for the Blind. Their union was a joyful chapter that brought two families together, and Mum warmly embraced Harold’s relatives: his brother Gerald, sister Ethel, niece Pam, and nephew Joe, as part of her own extended family.
Mum will be lovingly remembered for her skills in the kitchen where she made many treats for family and friends, including her famous home-made bread and cinnamon rolls.
Mum is survived by her children Christine (Kenneth) Varner, Wanda Legge (Cameron Crook), Laura (Brian) Best, Randy (Peggy) Legge, Kelly (Todd) LeFurgey; sisters, Ida Zinck and Eileen “Arlene” Oickle; sisters-in-law, Glenda Oickle and Barbara Baker; and brother-in-law, Gerald Mosher. She is also lovingly remembered by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her heartfelt happiness.
She is predeceased by her husbands, John Legge, and Harold Mosher; siblings Lois Tufts, Nellie Benjamin, and Albert Oickle; brothers-in-law, Parker Tufts, Donald Zinck, Claude Northup and sister-in-law Ethel Northup.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home by request. Service of Remembrance will be held 1 p.m., Friday, May 16 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 4895 Highway 10, New Germany. Rev. Catherine Robar officiating. Private family interment will follow in St. Cyprian’s Anglican Cemetery, East Dalhousie. Family flowers only please, memorial contributions may be directed to the CNIB or the St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church Cemetery Fund in Mum’s name.
The family would like to thank Dr. Peutz and Dr. Morgan, VON Homecare and Nursing Support, and Continuing Care for their assistance in caring for Mum in her final years.
