In loving memory of Mary Helda Maatta-James (nee Arsenault) 97 years, just one day shy of her birthday, passed away peacefully at St. Joesph’s Villa in Sudbury on Friday, February 14th, 2025.
She leaves behind her eldest daughter Nancy James (Real), grandchildren Nicole and Brian Jacques, as well as her great grandchildren Krystin and Evan, all of Sault Ste. Marie.
Helda outlived her husband and father of her children Harold Maatta and later in life her second husband Douglas James. Unfortunately, she lost her youngest daughter Carol Maatta (Bryant Higgins) who had been her cherished, long-time caregiver.
Helda’s only son Norman Maatta (Margaret) and granddaughter Kimblery Maatta are both predeceased. Surviving is her eldest great grandson Zachary Tremblay of Sudbury.
She will be remembered by brother’s Marcel Arsenault (Freda) of BC, and Claude Arsenault (Cecile) of Val Caron. Her predeceased siblings are Art Arsenault, Armand Arsenault, Yvon Arsenault, Lorraine Lapierre, Julie Sikora, and Sally Beaudry. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by nieces and nephews.
Helda had been active and a longtime member of the YMCA and the One-Eleven Seniors Club. She also enjoyed taking bus trips with her friends and visiting her daughter in Florida during the winter.
The family wished to thank the wonderful staff at the Villa (Sunnyside) for the excellent care they provided to her.
At her request there will be no visitation or service. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium with entombment alongside her daughter Carol in the Civic Cemetery at a later date.
