Mary Germaine Skinner (Boudreau), born Jan 11, 1936, in the little village of Petit De Grats, Richmond County, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at the Mahone Nursing Home. Her parents were Lillian Cecilia and Wilfred Boudreau.
She was the youngest of 10 children (5 boys/5 girls). Germaine grew up, attended school and spent the first few decades in her hometown. When her mother and father became ill, Germaine left school to help care for them and maintain all the daily household duties. Also, during this time, she worked privately as a housekeeper for local families, including the region’s priest, Father Alfred Boudreau. One day, Germaine and her older sister Clementine (Picco), went to see Clementine‘s husband’s fishing dragger that was on a slip in Port Hawkesbury, NS for repairs. While there, Germaine was introduced to Kenneth “Raymond” Skinner, who, a few years later would become her husband.
The couple married in May of 1961 in Bridgewater, as they were living with Raymond’s family in Centre, and after the birth of their first child, Kenneth (Lorna Gillis) Skinner, Halifax, they moved to nearby Lunenburg.
Raymond and Germaine had 2 more children, Theresa (Patrick) Ring, Blockhouse and Michael (Felicia Gonzalez) Skinner, Lunenburg, and now has 3 adult grandsons, Kelsey Skinner, Ethan and Logan Ring, all of whom she loved and was so proud of. She spent her life devoted to the care of her children and home. Even though she was an avid house cleaner, she made time to enjoy long walks with her husband and sister, Lorraine. Germaine adored cats, always having one in the home. However, she was not “fond” of dogs, encountering numerous, and running away quickly from those on her walks. Even today, the mere mention of those walks brought a smile to her face and a giggle. She also loved blueberry picking, going to bingo and playing cards, like 45’s and Rummy.
In May of 2019, after the death of her beloved Raymond, she moved to Ridgewood so she could be close to her remaining sister, and later to Mahone Nursing Home.
She is predeceased by siblings Francis, Vincent, Renie, Edith (Richards), Lorraine and Lucille. She is survived by her brother Raymond of Lunenburg and sister Clementine Picco (Mahone Nursing Home), and numerous nieces, nephews and their extended families.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy 3, Lunenburg and from where a service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, September 4 at 11:00 am, Rev. Patrick Morris officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church, Lunenburg.
The family would like to extend their gratitude towards the wonderful staff at the Mahone Nursing Home. They cared for mom like she was their own, with genuine love and true compassion, giving us peace of mind. A special heartfelt thanks and appreciation for Dr Raymond, who always respected mom’s decisions, treated her with dignity and provided thorough, thoughtful care, which she kept the family informed of so diligently.
