Mary Okanski (nee Miller)
Mary is survived by her children: Tom (MaryAnn Hodge and daughter Samantha), Marianne Robertson (David), Jennifer Takeda (Yutaka), Peter (Sandra McFetridge); Grandchildren Everett and Warren Okanski, James and Emma Robertson, Liam and Logan Okanski, Great-Grandchildren Isla, Seraphina and Freya Okanski, Dahlia and Lachlan Fiset-Robertson and former daughter-in-law Lynn.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Paul, parents Thomas and Genevieve Miller, brother Ken Miller and granddaughter Haley Takeda.
Born in London, Ontario, Mary moved to Thunder Bay with her parents and graduated as a nurse from McKellar Hospital. The family moved to Red Lake in the early 1950s, where her parents taught at RLDHS. Mary worked at the Red Cross Hospital in Red Lake then at the Cochenour Hospital and Clinic. It was in Red Lake that she met her future husband, Paul.
In 1967 they took on their Centennial Project, a move to Red Lake and the running of the P&M What Not Shop. The partnership often meant Mary was in front dealing with the salesmen who came to visit hoping to stock the store shelves. She proved to be a shrewd buyer and Dad would retire to the back office and storeroom for those visits.
Mary was a survivor. In the early 1960’s mom was afflicted with Steven Johnson Syndrome, which resulted in multiple health complications and gradual blindness.
Many thanks to Marilou Pacatang who worked for Mom and helped her stay in her home as long as she did. Mary moved to Northwood Lodge in 2020 during the pandemic and fire evacuation. Many thanks the staff of Northwood Lodge for their caring and compassion.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 11 AM at the Red Lake United Church. Friends are invited to gather afterwards at the Community Support room at the lower level of Northwood lodge.
Donation if you wish can be made to CNIB Guide Dogs or a charity of your choice through the Red Lake Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 237, Red Lake, ON P0V 2M0.
