Mary Elevena Webb Obituary
It is with great sadness that the children of Mary Elevena Webb (Nickel) announce her sudden passing on the evening of Saturday, February 8, 2025, a few weeks before the start of her 88th year. We do take comfort that she was healthy and happy right till the end and passed peacefully in her home.
Mary was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Thomas Webb in June of 2024.
Mary is survived by her 6 children Ivy , Jack, Tom (Shauna), Kay (Don) Coad, Donald (Laurie), and Douglas. As well as 12 Grandchildren, Michelle (Tyler), Michael, Tyler, Allison, Josh, Teagan, Aidan, Mary Jessica (Mat), Nicole, Danny, Taylor, Sam. As well as 4 great grandchildren.
Mary is also survived by her one remaining brother, Jake Nickel, a few cousins and many nieces and nephews and their families who she remained close with.
Along with being a wonderful wife and mother, Mary was a devout Jehovah Witness who’s two greatest loves were her family and her faith.
Mary was born on February 27, 1937 in Lost River Saskatchewan. She moved to Vernon, B.C. at 9 years old. She often talked about her first day of school there where she was too shy to go in and stood outside crying …she was rescued quickly. In her teen years she picked tomatoes at Ringo-En Orchards in Vernon. She even learned how to say I Love You in Japanese and shared her fond memories from the orchard, which is still there today and she visited in September, 2024.
After graduation she worked in Vernon Tax Department. She soon met her husband Tom while attending a wedding in Falkland B.C. She bravely asked him to dance and he promptly said “No, I don’t dance”. The story always was that Tom had spotted her earlier and told his friend that “there is the woman I am going to marry”. He began courting her shortly afterwards.
While dating Tom, she bravely moved to Vancouver on her own and worked at CPR for about 8 months, and returned to Vernon where they were married on September 22, 1957.
They moved to Alberta in 1958 and settled in Wetaskiwin. After two babies Mary went back to work at Wetaskiwin City Hall for a few years. After 5 kids they moved to Sherwood Park in 1964 where Mary became even more of a homemaker extraordinaire. She was a wonderful cook, gardener and seamstress. We always had 3 wonderful meals, garden vegetables, baking, homemade bread and buns, hot breakfasts, homemade preserves, jams & pickles to name a few – and some pretty cool homemade shirts with smiley faces, dresses, superhero capes etc.
In 1974 the family moved to the acreage in Turner Valley. Mary’s garden was much bigger, along with a greenhouse so the goodness at our table got even better.
Mary went back to work at the Alberta Treasury Branch in Black Diamond (1974-1988) and later worked at Country Food Mart (1989-1997). She then worked at Weight Watchers in Calgary for a year and moved on to sell Watkins Products from 1991 to 2002.
She enjoyed many trips to Kelowna, B.C. to spend time with her two sisters and their daughters – laughing, eating, and playing games.
She did various trips with her children to the West and East Coasts, ski hills, Disney Cruise, Florida and more.
Mary was in the Black Diamond congregation of Jehovah Witnesses for some 50 years. Her brothers and sisters were such a huge part of her life and they treated her with nothing but kindness and love. She traveled with friends from her congregation on Bethel tours to New York City and spent over a month touring Europe in 2000. We are so grateful for this.
We must thank her upstairs neighbors Peter and Michelle Walliser who looked out for her, drove her to the Kingdom Hall, brought her hotdogs from Costco, homemade cooking, and took her on many fun outings.
Mary was a beautiful, kind, classy lady inside and out and was loved by everyone she met. Her children loved her deeply and she will be missed more than we can express.
A memorial service will be held for Mary on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Okotoks at 3:00 pm. (386042, 8 St E, Okotoks, AB). If you would like to watch via Zoom please contact her kids and they can provide the link.
