POKORADI (nee Higham), Mary Ann
July 28th, 1959 – March 16th, 2025
Mary Ann passed away peacefully on Sunday March 16t, 2025, at Hamilton General Hospital, held by her husband and her girls, after a short, courageous collision with lung cancer. Predeceased by treasured mother Mary, and father Doug. Lovingly remembered by brothers Dougie (Mitzie), Gordie (Lorraine), and Johnny (Robin). Profoundly missed by lifelong friends, Lisa and Dave, their children, Emma (Nathan), &andAndy (Emily), and her little buddies, Matthew and Zack. Fondly remembered by many friends, cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and “honourary kids” for her boundless warmth, playfulness, and generosity.
Dennis, her constant companion of 40 years, and their daughters, Carly (Tom), and Elyse, are lost together without Mummit, the author of their joy. They cherished her infinitely and will carry her unabashed love forever.
Mary Ann’s family extend their deep gratitude to the compassionate nurses, doctors, and staff at the General Hospital who championed her dignity and agency while in their competent care.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life honoring Mary Ann with stories, music, and food will be held on Sunday March 30th from 4pm-8pm at Mary Ann’s old stomping grounds, the Corktown Pub, 175 Young St. Hamilton, with a tribute set to take place at 6:30pm. In the spirit of Mary Ann’s sunny presence and her love of springtime, guests are encouraged to wear yellow or spring colours. We invite everyone to help us build a memorial scrapbook – please bring any photos, stories or mementos of Mary Ann that you would like to contribute.
Despite the many curveballs life threw her way, Mary Ann proudly persevered to complete her BA in English with Honours. To honour her insatiable love of learning, a scholarship has been established in Mary Ann’s name at McMaster University for parents pursuing post-secondary studies. In lieu of flowers, contributions to this endowment can be made at alumni.mcmaster.ca/maryannpokoradi.
Please take some time to share your memories and kind words on the tribute wall.
