Born in 1936 to Howard and Evelyn Wride Hall. Marvyn leaves behind Barbara, his wife of 67 years, his sisters: Myrna (Larry) Dunsdon, Shirley (Ronald) Rice, and Sheila (Ross) Pollard, and his children: Richard (Lauren) Hall of Massachusetts, Brian (Oowan) Hall of Thailand and Joanne (Scott McCardle) Hall of Vancouver. Marvyn was also the proud grandfather of Ryland, Cameron, Zoe, Brooks and Brace.
Marvyn was happiest when he was among friends and family, with a four-legged sidekick in his lap, a beer in his hand, and a hockey game on the ice or the TV; on the golf course or poolside on a hot summer day; tucking into a feast (and every meal was a feast for Marvyn) or visiting his kids and grandkids around the globe.
Among many distinctive character traits, confidence was perhaps Marvyn’s greatest asset. He was exactly who and what he was, without inhibition or filter. But because his authenticity was paired with good humor and joie de vivre, he got away with legendary teasing and endless hijinks, had a wide circle of friends, was the life of every gathering, and enjoyed a long and successful business career, including his dream job of working for Cooper Sporting Goods, through which he befriended many hockey greats.
As his son Brian put it, “My father seemed to brighten almost every single room he entered. Whether it was a hockey dressing room, the family living room, a social event, or any other venue, the sparkling glint of his blue eyes and radiant grin as he approached always seemed to put people at ease. He looked right at you when listening to you speak, and even if his reply was not always the most eloquent, the timing of his response was generally impeccable and the care with which it was delivered was pure.”
Known for “Marvysh,” the language of nicknames and unique idioms that peppered his speech, Marv was a true character: lovable, inimitable and memorable. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
