Obituary
Long-time Oakville resident and Toronto-based lawyer, Martin Andrew Sear, passed away on February 27, 2025 at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital. Predeceased by his parents, Ken and Vera Sear, and his wife, Penelope Truman Sear, all of Hamilton. Martin is survived by his daughter, Allison Sear (Michael Jones), his grandson, Vincent Martin Sear-Jones – all of Hamilton and his recent close companion, Christine Tripodi of Oakville.
Born in South Hampstead, England, Martin’s family emigrated to Canada in 1952 and settled in Hamilton where Martin grew up and attended local schools, graduating from Central Public School in 1963.
That Fall, he enrolled at Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut where he began many life-long friendships and mingled with future world leaders in Government and business. Marty, as he was known, was a member of the Fence Club Fraternity and a valued forward on the Undefeated 1963-64 Freshmen Hockey Team. He would go on to win six varsity letters – three in hockey and three in Baseball where he was the starting catcher. After graduating from Yale with a BA in American Studies, Martin continued his education at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and was afterward admitted to practice law in Canada. He became a Partner with McLean and Kerr and, then, with Blaney McMurtry.
Martin’s adult life was quite full – dominated by family activities, his Law practice, Conservative politics, business ventures, dogs and cats (Martin was an animal lover) and golf trips with friends. After initially living in Etobicoke, The Sear family relocated to Oakville in the late ‘80’s and Never left.
Martin and Penny were long-time members of St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Etobicoke where Martin maintained a single-digit handicap and a large stable of close and devoted friends. For many years, Martin went on golf trips with friends. He helped organize one annual trip with a mix of local pals who were mostly either professionals or Businessmen. He also got together with a group of his Yale Contemporaries – hockey players and otherwise – two or three times per year.
In his last months, Martin lived at The Kensington in Oakville where he was able to continue his cherished local relationships while getting great care.
A Memorial will be held Saturday March, 22, 2025 at 1-3pm. At Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home. 64 Lakeshore Road West Oakville, Ontario.
Martin’s family asks that if you would like to make a donation in his name can do so at either Trillium Gift of Life or Princess Margaret Hospital.
