Martha Pauline Stokes Obituary
Stokes, Martha “Pauline” (June 26, 1947 – August 19, 2025). With deep sadness, we want to announce the peaceful passing of Martha “Pauline” Stokes at Matthews House Hospice in Alliston on August 19th, 2025, surrounded by family and the love of family and friends. Born in 1947 in Petrolia, Pauline is survived by her daughter Amy and grandson Hunter. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Robert “Lloyd” Stokes, parents Bob and Alice (nee Weese) Gatecliff, sisters Lena (Jack) MacDonald and Lillian (Fred) Somes, and in-laws Robert and Della Stokes, Albert Stokes, Margaret Stokes, Emma Gallerno, and Clifford Stokes. Survived by sisters Norma Kettle (Richard), Ila Boshaw (Terry), Kerry Hayden (Dave Shearim), brother Grant Gatecliff (Bonnie), sisters-in-law Karen Hart (Larry) and Edith Stokes (Clifford), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pauline was raised on her family’s farm on the Enniskillen-Dawn Town Line. She was a proud daughter of hard-working farmers, but she preferred doing her share of the work inside the house. Rather than milk cows or shovel manure, she preferred to cook and clean and babysit her younger siblings.
Pauline worked for Scotiabank for over 40 years, eventually becoming a mainstay at Petrolia and Brigden branches, where her warm smile and infectious laugh greeted everyone who came through the doors. She was a welcoming, kind, positive influence for many years, becoming a friend and mentor for many of the staff she met. Some of her closest relationships were formed through the connections she made at work.
Pauline was a member of Oil City United Church until its official closing. She was very involved with the Lambton Presbyterial United Church Women (U.C.W.) for many years, using her banking skills as the treasurer before her retirement.
Pauline loved to host family gatherings, holiday get-together and parties on their parcel of heaven on Marthaville Road. She found joy in the pool and on the back deck, watching The Brandons and later The Andersons grow beans, hay, and corn. Her family and chosen-family were always welcome. After 54 years, Pauline and Lloyd happily moved to Alliston to spend as much time as they could with their daughter and grandson.
Pauline’s health had suffered over the last couple of months. Despite the challenges, she continued to light up whenever she got to see, talk to, or play with her grandson, the light of her life. She often said that she waited 70 years to become a grandmother and she loved every moment of it.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made in Pauline’s honour to Matthews House Hospice in Alliston or Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston.
Cremation has taken place. Service and Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
