Marjorie Marie Canning Obituary
August 27, 1944- February 17,2025
It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Marjorie Marie (Walsh) Canning, at the age of 80 years. She passed away peacefully at the Agnes Pratt Home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Predeceased by her father, Herbert Walsh; mother, Josephine (White) Walsh; sisters, Marie (Walsh) Holloway, Betty (Walsh) Broderick; brother, Joseph Walsh; husband, Elihu Canning.
Leaving to mourn are her children, Richard and Alice (Scott); sisters, Shirley (Russell), Margaret, Linda (John), Debbie (Dan) and Pam (John); brothers, Herbert (Gladys), John, Wayne (Geraldine), Gerald (Marilyn), Glenn (Sandy), and Neil.
Marjorie was born in Cull’s Harbour, NL. She left the province at a young age and moved to Toronto, where she met and married her husband, Elihu, and had their first child, Richard. They returned to NL in the 70s and had their second child, Alice.
Marjorie was a loving wife and mother who loved her family dearly and nothing mattered more to her than her two children. She was a great homemaker and fantastic baker; always making amazing cookies, pies, and cakes, and always a battle to keep Richard away from those containers of goodies in the freezer! Richard and Alice shared so many fond childhood moments with their mother.
Marjorie was very outspoken and could carry on a conversation about any topic. She was very well liked and loved by anyone who came to know her. She loved to laugh and had a smile that could light up a room! She loved to listen to music and would play tunes all day while cooking and cleaning in the house, which was always kept spotless! She enjoyed many happy moments with her daughter Alice as they loved to go shopping and have coffee/lunch dates. At one point, Marjorie and her husband lived in Calgary close to their son, Richard, for a few years (2011-2014). She really enjoyed her time there and Alice would visit once a year.
Marjorie worked in the Education and Healthcare sectors in her lifetime. She worked at Glovertown elementary school and later changed careers as a nursing assistant for the Hoyles/Escasoni Nursing Homes in St. John’s. She was very highly regarded by her colleagues as a kind, caring, and pleasant person to be around, and could do anything she set her mind to.
We wish to thank the staff at the Agnes Pratt Home, particularly Pratt Place and Southview, for the care they provided to our mother over the last 4+ years.
Flowers gratefully received or donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Visitation will take place on Sunday May 25th, 2025 from 3:00pm-7:00pm at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl. Funeral service will be held on Monday, May 26th, 2025 at 11:00am from Barrett’s Mount Pearl Chapel. Inurnment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Mount Pearl.
