Our mom, Marion Vlasaty, was one of the wackiest people around, but in the best possible way. She loved her family above all else and shared a very special bond with her grandchildren Fox, Myla, and Stefan. She delighted in their creativity; whether it was a game of Bad Kitty or making horrifically messy slime, she was always game. For the last 9 ½ years, she was known as “Grammy” by everyone. She brought endless joy, and sometimes worry, to her family. She spent the last 25 years living at the place she loved best- the cottage. She was fiercely independent despite her myriad of health problems, and she lived life by her own rules. She loved sitting out on the deck in the summer, watching the sun rise and set while enjoying a cup of coffee and the odd cigarette (which she knew damn well she shouldn’t be having). Grammy loved to swim, read voraciously, and still maintained her child-like wonder for all things technological.
Mom spent the early part of her life in Toronto, with her Slovak immigrant parents, Mary and Steve Vlasaty. Her favourite food was homemade French fries, and as the classic middle child, she was constantly being reprimanded for her wildness. She met her lifelong best friend, Sonja McLeod, on the street she grew up on, and they added Mary Lang to that troupe when they all worked in the kitchen at Camp Kandalore as young teenagers. These deep-rooted bonds remained intact despite distance, life circumstances, and age.
As an adult, mom dedicated her life to helping children as a teacher at the Halton Board of Education. She advocated for children who required additional support that might have otherwise fallen through the cracks. She ran her own Special Education classroom at Sunningdale Public School in Oakville in the final years of her career. Her empathetic nature and deep commitment to ongoing learning made her the ideal teacher, mother, and grandmother.
She is survived by her children, James, Zoe, and Christine Waller, Christine’s partner, Joey Scharman, her grandchildren, Fox, Myla, and Stefan, ex-husband (but still close friend and aggravator) Dennis Waller, sisters Gene Moore and Diane Turriff, and by her brother-in-law, John Turriff, who enjoyed British murder mysteries almost as much as she did. Sadly, her brother-in-law John Moore passed away last spring. She was a loving Auntie Marion to Karen and Suzanne Moore and Madeline and Victoria Turriff. Although there is almost 20 years of age between her nieces, she was always game to babysit or take them for overnights at the cottage. She took great pride in their accomplishments, but above all else, wished for them to find glimmers of happiness in this life.
There is no way to adequately describe how grateful we are to have experienced the unwavering love and support of our mother. She has left a painful hole in the lives of those who truly knew her, but we will honour her memory by being the most generous, empathetic, loving, and hilarious parents to our own children. We hope that one day they will light the world on fire with their humor, intelligence, and kindness the same way their Grammy did.
