Obituary of Marie Steele
STEELE: B. Marie (Antone) Yakokweni
In her 93rd year, Marie passed away at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on March 16, 2025, with family by her side.
Born November 30th, 1932 at the Oneida Nation of the Thames, Marie was a proud Oneida woman of the wolf clan who grew up speaking the Oneida language. From a young age she attended Mount Elgin residential school and was a residential school survivor.
She was the matriarch of her family and beloved wife of 63 years to Robert Steele, loving mother to her three children, Keith (Ann) of Ennismore, Kathleen Padulo (Greg) of Toronto and Kenneth (Audrey Robichaud) of Toronto. Proud grandmother to three grandchildren, Robert Garai (Kelsey), and Benn and Neve Padulo. Survived by her brother Richard Antone and brother-in-law Frank Doxtator. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her son David Antone, parents Richard and Olive, brothers Roger and Melvin (Ruth), sisters Pat George (Cedric) and Laura Doxtator and sisters-in-law Marion and Irene.
Marie’s other great love was sewing. She quickly accumulated 3 sewing machines and turned a sewing room with hand-chosen fabrics into her sanctuary. She sewed all her children’s clothes when we were young, mending holes in our socks and jeans. She loved attending the Oneida Fall Fair where she set up a table with her many quilts, enjoying a bowl of corn soup, and visiting family. Later in life she joined the Otonabee Quilters Guild sewing beautiful quilts for people with cancer.
Marie came from a large extended family and when her children were still young decided to initiate the Antone family reunion so we could all appreciate the value in gathering together every summer; playing games, telling stories and enjoying meals together.
Marie’s Oneida name Yakokweni means “She is Able”, and although Marie suffered from severe arthritis through-out her life she did not let any of this deter her ambitions in life. Her faith was always a great part of her life, and we know she has made her journey to the Creator.
Much gratitude to Dr. Matheson and the palliative care team at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre for their gentle guidance and medical expertise.
Cremation has taken place with interment at Lakefield Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at Lakefield Baptist Church, Regent Street, Lakefield at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lakefield Baptist Church, Curve Lake Christian Assembly, or a charity of choice.
