It is with heavy hearts and tender sadness that we the family announce the peaceful passing of Marie Matisz on January 2nd 2025 at St. Paul’s Palliative Care Unit in Saskatoon.
Marie was born the youngest of 7 children to Louis and Julia Lukan on the family farm in the Pilger District on November 22, 1938. As a young woman Marie moved into Saskatoon along with her brother and mother. While working at Spotless Drycleaners on 20th Street, she met her husband, John Matisz. They were married in Allan on October 4th, 1958. They moved around the province with John’s career in the meat industry, while Marie was a stay-at-home mom. She took great pride and joy in her family and in creating a loving and caring home for her husband and children.
In 1974 they settled down in Saskatoon in a brand new neighbourhood on Boychuk Drive. Once her youngest child entered school, Marie returned to the workforce at Tip Top Cleaners. She worked for over 30 years in the drycleaning industry and took great pride in the quality of her work and her relationship with her customers.
After retirement they spent their summers at Wakaw Lake where they enjoyed precious time with their children and grandchildren. Marie’s winters were spent cheering for their grandchildren in various sports.
In April of 2023, Marie and John moved out of their home on Boychuk and onto a beautiful acreage just south of Saskatoon with Brenda Lee, Jim and her children. Marie was able to satisfy a lifetime dream to live on an acreage while gardening and enjoying the ample wildlife in the natural surroundings.
Marie enjoyed getting together with her siblings where she shared many happy memories and laugh-until-you-cry moments. Her love, kindness, warmth and sense of humour will be missed by all who knew her.
Marie is survived by her loving husband of 66 years John Matisz; children Bev Matisz (Debbie Moshinski); Barry Matisz (Lucille): Jeannine, Rachelle (Jordon Hrynuik): Remi, Brett [deceased] (Jessica): Ren; Brian Matisz (Takako): Kai, Leyna; Brenda Lee Deck (Jim Blahun): Braden, Riley, Katie.
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to the last of Julia and Louis’ children and their spouses. Marie was predeceased by her siblings: Viola (Edwin) Pfaff; Ermina (Clarence) Theisen; Roman (Anne) Lukan; James (Florianna) Lukan; Alvina (Keith) Baker; and Wilfred Lukan (died in infancy). Marie is also predeceased by her grandson Brett Matisz.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Palliative Care Unit for the respect and care they provided Marie and the family. They would also like to thank Dr. Kolbenson and the staff of the RUH Emergency department for their outstanding compassion and care.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on January 8th, 2025 at St. Augustine Parish, 602 Boychuk Drive, Saskatoon
In memory of Marie, donations can be made to the Saskatoon Palliative Care Unit.
