Obituary of Maria Jermolow
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother (Baba), Grandmother, Great-grandmother, Maria Jermolow (Huzenko), who passed away peacefully surrounded by love and in arms of her family. Our loving God received Maria on March 24, 2025 in her 101st year.
Beloved wife of the late Peter Jermolow. Loving mother of Victor Jermolow (Gail), Jackie Verkaik (late Jack), Zoe Chmiel (late Joe), Irene Pahor (Nick). Proud Baba of Andrea (Herb), Michelle (Jason), Yvette (Paul), Peter (Margarita), Rachelle (Brian), Cindy (Bill) Sue-Ann (Stephane), Peter (Adriana), Melanie (Matt) , Mark (Gus), Nicole (Chris), Nadine (Jeff), Michael (Darianna) and proud Great-Baba to twenty-two great grandchildren.
Maria was born in Ukraine and overcame many hardships. She survived the Ukrainian Holodomor (Soviet man-made famine of 1932-1933); she then went on to survive WW2. During the war she was sent to a German work camp where she met and married her husband Peter. After the war ended they immigrated to France where they worked on a sugar beet farm. In 1954 they immigrated to Canada with their three children. Despite these hardships you never heard Maria complain. She found the beauty in life everywhere she went. She was resourceful, protective, strong, determined, selfless, loving, practical and positive. Maria and Peter built a beautiful life in Canada and had their fourth child. Maria, was known for her strong work ethic. She walked miles to and from work to various packing plants, and in the summer she took on a second job in the Holland Marsh to provide for her family. She retired at 65 from Ontario Produce.
Maria’s love for her family was her legacy. For her, there was no greater joy than a noisy house full of family. She loved hosting Sunday lunch, and huge dinners, where she would make her cabbage rolls, breaded chicken or pork chops, mashed potatoes and her famous gravy. After her retirement her joy was her garden and grandchildren. She cared for and loved all of 13 grandchildren like no other.
In her 92nd year Maria moved into Bradford Valley where she received great care from the staff. Thank you to all the Bradford Valley staff on Harvest for caring for Maria (Baba), we appreciate you all!
Memorial visitation will be held at Skwarchuk Funeral Home, 30 Simcoe Road, Bradford on Sunday, April 6, 2025 from 2-5pm. Private burial.
In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorial donations can be made to Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation.
