Obituary for Marguerite Dickson Mack Walker
August 6, 1927 – January 20, 2025
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Marguerite (Rita) Walker (nee McCulloch) on January 20, 2025. She was a beloved Mother, Mother-In-Law, Auntie, and friend that will be sorely missed. She is survived by her daughter Heather, daughter-in-law Laila, and nephew Tommy.
Rita was born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1927 to Thomas and Marguerite McCulloch, and grew up with her siblings Mary, Jean and John. From a very young age Rita fell in love with singing and music, and by age 6 she was publicly belting out songs much to her mother’s chagrin. Her cheeky humour and love of fashion have been signature traits throughout her whole life. Growing up, Rita always had dogs and as a lifelong dog lover, she counted herself lucky in her later years to have two furry grandbabies Jersey and Grey, whom she adored and visited often.
Rita worked during World War 2 handing out rations and supplies to the troops and their families, all while taking cover in bomb shelters when the sirens rang out. When the war ended, Rita escaped into the world of music, and could be found dancing the night away at various clubs, and trying to sneak home quietly past her father’s curfew.
Rita married in 1951 and immigrated to Canada in 1956 with her 2 year old son Alec. Rita went on to have another son Brian, and a daughter Heather. She thoroughly enjoyed being a full time mother, and never a dish nor an article of clothing was out of place. Her love of singing continued throughout her life, and she ran a Barbershop Quartet which competed in the Brockville, Ontario area.
Rita eventually moved to British Columbia after the tragic death of her 20 year old son Alec, and devoted a large part of her life to volunteering in the Burnaby community. She continued her love of music, and visited various seniors’ centres singing, and performing in musicals to brighten their spirits.
She was a proud Scottish lass who frequently led the annual Robert Burns Selkirk Grace before the haggis meal on Rabbie Burns Day.
In the last hour of her life, Rita sang and listened to Scottish songs with her devoted daughter by her side.
“Move forward with happy memories of me and do not mourn me for too long, as I am happily re-united with my first son, whom I missed every single day since his passing in 1974”.
Rest in peace dear Rita, your life of music, love and service will live on in our hearts forever.
Special thanks to everyone at Vancouver General Hospital who gave Rita the utmost care and compassion in her final days.
