Marguerite’s Obituary
It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Marguerite Ann Cowles on April 1, 2025. After battling many health conditions, God came to take her to rest in Heaven, free from pain to dance with loved ones.
Marguerite is survived by her Sons’ Blake (Tammy) Cowles, Brent Cowles; Grandchildren, Daniel Cowles, Brock (Karyn) Cowles, Jasmyne (Patrick) Vezeau and Great-Grandchildren Alexander Cowles, Nash Vezeau; Brother-in-Law Terry Cousineau, Sister Phyllis Neyers along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her Husband and the love of her life, Sidney (Mike) Cowles, Daughters, Cindy Cowles and Mary Cowles and 2 Sons. Mother Bertha Agrey, Father Milton Agrey; Brother Eddy Agrey and Sister Sharon Cousineau; Nephews Derwin Agrey and Cook Cousineau.
Mom led a very busy life and enjoyed being kept busy. She took every opportunity she had and never hesitated to join a committee, prep and cook meals or help out a friend or an acquaintance in need. Mom was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on May 3rd, 1944 and at the age of 17 on October 21, 1961 married Sidney Cowles of 35 years until his passing in 1996.
In 1968 they packed up their bags and moved to McKenzie Island to grow and raise their family. She was a passionate gardener, liked to fish and sit out in her screened-in deck, having a beer with Mike, looking out on to the lake. Mom enjoyed dancing, family, friends, cooking, baking, sharing recipes and sitting down to have a good chat. She always had a story to tell and with her immaculate memory she could tell you a story from years past or a story from a few weeks ago. Mom had a saying for everything, we only wish we wrote all those sayings down. She loved company and always gave you her undivided attention. She made the most awesome cinnamon buns, pumpkin pies, desserts, and meals, she just had the knack of adding a little bit of this and a little bit of that to make the food the best you tasted. Mom loved to get up in the night and make her famous cheese whiz sandwiches in which her children followed shortly afterwards to make their famous midnight snack. Marguerite loved her Grandchildren dearly and enjoyed watching them grow to be wonderful young respectful adults who were raising her beautiful Great-Grandchildren.
Mom loved living on McKenzie Island and developed a lot of friendships and made a lot of fond memories. During her time in the Red Lake area Marguerite was an avid Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 102 for many years and later President of the Ladies’ Auxiliary. She sat on the Board of Directors for the Red Lake Indian Friendship Centre and belonged to the Red Hat Society. Mom started her working career as a Nurse in a Psychiatric Ward in Alberta and when moving to the Red Lake Area worked 20+ years at the Harmony Centre as a Support Worker. Mom spent her last 3-4 years of life in Northwood Lodge where she continued to make friends, visit, share recipes and sit on the Residents committee.
Rest in Peace Mom you will forever be missed, never forgotten and fondly remembered with love and admiration. You touched so many in this world with your kindness.
Family and friends are welcome to a casual celebration of life that will be held on Tuesday, April 8th from 12 noon to 2 pm in the Red Lake Royal Canadian Legion Lounge. A private interment will be held at a later date.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Indian Friendship Centre through the Red Lake Chapel, Box 237, Red Lake, ON P0V 2M0.
