It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of
Margaret Leone “Loney” MacLean (Petrie) on Friday, January
17, 2025, in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. Born in 1939 in New Waterford,
Nova Scotia, Loney lived a life full of dedication, creativity, and
service, leaving an indelible mark on her community and all who knew
her.
In her early married
life, Loney played an important role in establishing and administering
her husband, Dr. Sterling MacLean’s, medical practice in
Tatamagouche. Her passion for community service was evident in her
work in local and provincial politics. Loney also served on various
community boards and was an active member of groups such as the North
Shore Bavarian Society. She was a driving force in founding and
running the Tatamagouche Creamery Square, now recognized as a
designated heritage centre.
A true homemaker at
heart, Loney also found joy in cooking and caring for her home as well
as a variety of hobbies over the years, including ceramics, sewing,
knitting, quilting, and vegetable gardening. She enjoyed traveling,
first on family adventures and later with close friends, always
embracing the beauty and experiences the Maritimes had to
offer.
Loney is survived by
her son, Sean (Charlene) MacLean, Halifax; brother, Cyril Petrie,
Dartmouth; sister, Dorothy (Wyman) Gilroy, Mississauga and many nieces
and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Catherine
Petrie; her husband, Dr. Sterling MacLean; her son, Sterling MacLean;
her daughter, Sandra MacLean; her brothers, James, John, William,
Robbie, Billie, Alex, Donnie; and sisters, Julia, Charlotte, Millie,
Annie and Frazie. Loney will be dearly missed by many including her
sister-in-law, Melinda MacLean; and her niece, Catherine (Douglas)
MacLean.
Loney’s
dedication to her family, her community, and her many passions will be
remembered fondly by all who were fortunate to know her. The family
would like to extend a special thanks to Loney’s friends and
community members for being a part of her life and lending a helping
hand over the years. Cremation has taken place and she will be laid to
rest at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of
flowers, donations in Loney’s memory may be made to a
community organization or charity close to your heart.
