In Celebration of
Maciej Niedzwiecki
August 5, 1939 –
February 3, 2025
Peacefully, on February 3, with his family at his side, Maciej Niedzwiecki passed into his new life.
Born in Warsaw, Poland on August 5, 1939, Maciej’s childhood was shaped by the tragedy of war. At a very young age Maciej had lost both his mother (Stefania), and his only brother (Wojtek).
Following in his father’s footsteps, Maciej pursued a law degree, but was soon intrigued by and drawn to the construction industry. His work in this field offered him daily challenges and experiences that he often passed along to his family at the dinner table.
In Poland, friends introduced Maciej to a lovely young woman, named Mary, visiting her homeland from Canada. Shortly after Mary returned to her Ontario home, Maciej decided Canada was where he was meant to be.
When Maciej married Mary on December 11, 1973, he became part of the larger Pietowski family already living in Canada. Together they carried on with traditions brought over from Poland and made new traditions. Maciej worked hard in the dynamic GTA construction industry for over 40 years, providing his expertise in completing many projects.
In the 1980s they welcomed two sons, Matthew and Mackenzie. Although both parents worked hard to provide for their children, they also found time for skiing, spending time at the cottage, collecting and displaying art, enjoying good food together, and travelling.
In 2020, the sudden passing of Mary – Maciej’s life companion – was a blow to him. Maciej’s later years were spent more quietly, highlighted by daily walks in his neighbourhood, a continuation of a lifelong fascination with international politics, (continuing to cast his vote as a Polish citizen, right up to 2023), an enjoyment of traditional family celebrations, and his new role as “Dziadziu” to his beloved grandchildren, always with treats ready to offer them on Saturday morning visits.
Maciej was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Pietowski); his parents, Antoni and Stefania Niedzwiecki; his brother, Wojtek Niedzwiecki; and his parents-in-law, Jan and Kazimiera Pietowski.
Survived by dear sons, Matthew (Iwona), of Krakow, and Mackenzie (Laura Waddell), of Mississauga; and his grandchildren Martyna; and Madeleine, Ronan, and Elise. Also survived by brother-in-law Walter (Sophie) Pietowski, cousin-in-law Krystyna (Lorrie) Goldstein, and their children and families.
Maciej’s family will always be grateful for the excellent caregiving provided by Oksana. Her company and warm meals provided great sustenance when needed.
Thank you, Dad/Dziadziu, for your loving and nurturing presence in our lives. Rest now in peace.
