Luise Kohler Obituary
Luisa was born in Nurnberg, Germany, and was the eldest of 4 children. Unfortunately, WW2 broke out when she was a young child and her childhood was difficult and traumatic as they were often in the midst of the bombing and moved from place to place and never settled. As a very young teenager Luisa was sent to work as a nanny and housekeeper for well to do people where she learned to become an excellent cook and specialized in making fancy tortes and handmade chocolates. She dreamed of having children of her own some day and cared deeply about the babies she helped raise. When she met her husband Wilhelm (Willi) Kohler at age 20, it was love at first sight. After their marriage, his application to immigrate to Canada was accepted and they travelled by ship to Montreal in 1957.
They quickly learned English and assimilated into the Canadian way of life, working hard and purchasing their first home within 4 years of arriving. Daughter Elizabeth was born in 1960 followed by daughter Christine 3 years later. In 1965 Willi secured a position with the University of Toronto and they made the move to Ontario. Over the years Luisa worked at various jobs, excelling at all. She became a very successful real estate agent in the 70’s. Her clients loved her and referred their friends to her because she was known for her honesty and the sincere and caring way in which she treated her clients. A bout of ill health inspired Luisa’s interest in natural medicine and she started a thriving health food store business which she operated for 12 years. In June of 1980 her husband of 25 years, Willi, passed away suddenly. Luisa was very involved in her church over the years and she also travelled quite a bit. After selling her store she spent a few years living in Chicago and then settled in White Rock, BC, where she opened a unique gift shop called Angels & Miracles. In 2007 she moved to Banff, Alberta, to live with her daughter and two grandsons. Luisa was always close to her daughters and was a very devoted mother and grandmother. They were her world. She had a way with people and could talk with anyone! She had a wonderful laugh and she was generous and thoughtful. At the same time, she was a very private person and very devoted to her faith. In 2022 Luisa made her last move, to Jasper, where there is a wonderful care facility and where she could be close to daughter Elizabeth. Alpine Summit Lodge was her home for over two years and she would often say how much she liked living there. She usually had a big smile and a kind word to say. She was so well cared for there and we are so grateful for the tender care that all of her caregivers gave her over those 2 plus years. We are also grateful to the Doctors and nurses and aids at Seton Hospital, who made sure she was as comfortable as possible in her last few days. Luisa was surrounded by the love of her family when she passed.
Luisa is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth (& Robert) and Christine (& Kevin), and her two grandsons, Taylor (& Megan) and Aaron (& Marie). If you wish to make a donation in her memory we recommend donating to Evergreens Alpine Summit Lodge, Jasper.
Luisa was a survivor. She never gave up, she encouraged others with her wisdom and she was kind and earnest in her quest for enlightenment. She will be dearly missed.
