Obituary
In Loving Memory of Lucy Mae Payne (née Pittman)
January 10th , 1942 – February 19th, 2025
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Lucy Mae Payne, a woman whose kindness, devotion, and selflessness defined her life. Lucy left this world on February 19th, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
Lucy was born in St. Paul’s and trained as a nurse in St. John’s, a career she dedicated 35 years to with unwavering passion. Whether in Toronto, Botwood, Rocky Harbour/Norris Point, or Pasadena/Corner Brook, her commitment to providing compassionate care touched countless lives. Beyond her professional career, she was a loving wife and mother as well as a dedicated volunteer with the Red Cross and her church, always giving to those in need.
Lucy was never one to sit idle—she thrived on staying busy, whether it was helping others, lending a hand in the community, or cleaning up around the house. She took great pride in keeping things clean and organized, often saying that a good day was one where she had scrubbed, swept, or straightened something.
She was happiest when surrounded by family, especially during summers in Cow Head, where she found comfort in the presence of loved ones.
Lucy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Richard Payne (2011), her parents Norman and Elsie Pittman, her brother Lorne Pittman, sister-in-law Annie Pittman, and brother-in-law Hubert House. She was also predeceased by her parents-in-law Guy and Cora Payne, her sister- and brother- in-law Alice and Donald Payne, and her brothers-in-law Lawrence and Kenneth Payne.
She is lovingly remembered by her son, Rick Payne (Deanne), and grandchildren Ricky and Annika and her daughter, Susan (Scott), and grandchildren Callum and Kieran. She is also survived by her siblings Carl, Sadie, Coyley (Geraldine), Laud (Irene), Roddie (Glenda), Alonzo, and Velma as well as her sisters-in-law Bertha Payne and Sarah Payne in addition to Marie Bennett (Aunt). Lucy will be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and cherished friends.
Lucy’s kindness, strength, and generosity will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
