Lou (Lu) lived quite privately for 35 beautiful years with me, his partner in love and life, Christina (Tina) Morgan. We shared a great deal together, but nothing as strong as our love of animals. That had us live our life with ever so many rescue cats over those years. Lu leaves behind Smudge, Scuro, Yapper, Kong and Miss Fuzz; all who miss him desperately. Thank you, Dr. Jammu, for all you have done to help us in our efforts these many years.
Beyond our family of animals, Lu extended his giving heart to any creature that came across our property. Anyone who was hungry got fed – squirrels, skunks, raccoons, possums, groundhogs. Anyone in need, he helped. He rescued a group of possum babies whose mama had died; he gathered up ducklings in his jacket after work one day when no mama was seen anywhere. Injured crows, abandoned blue jay chicks, stray dogs – whatever species it was, if it was in need, he was there. And squirrels – oh, so many squirrels! No animal was ever discarded like trash – everyone was buried with great respect. Our thanks to Erie Wildlife Rescue for the many they took in on our behalf.
A first-generation Italian, Lu grew up from a young age working – mixing and pouring cement, building alongside his father and working a job from age 16 for money toward an education. He never lost that work ethic and continued to work up until his last days before knowing he was ill – taking care of our home and our animals. He was never an idle man.
Lu had many interests and pass-times which included photography, woodworking, puzzles, the enjoyment of watching movies and reading. His original library card was very worn, but he never wanted to give it up, because it was issued the first week that WPL introduced computers. It was quite literally just the barcode that was left. One of the librarians encased it in special plastic so that he could continue to use it.
He was a man who loved to absorb information from many sources and truly loved to share all he learned with anyone who would listen. The introduction of the internet was an awesome wonder to him – a place where you could research anything and share everything.
Though not a social man himself, whenever he joined me for an event, people gravitated toward him. He was personable and kind and chose to listen as much as he loved to talk.
As he was 35 when I met him, Lu had so much history before our time together. I loved to hear about all the things he had done before “us”, and after every story, or anything he showed me, he always ended with “and now you know everything” – I never did.
Everything Lu ever did was for me. His only concern was my well-being, even as he lay in hospital in his final days. For that, John, he was eternally grateful – thank you, sir.
Lu did not pass peacefully. It was a cruel and tortuous 40 day journey from the moment we received the news that he had pancreatic cancer. It was an evil monster that consumed him from within. He was too good a man to have had this fate cast upon him. My only consolation at this time is that he is no longer suffering.
Lu’s wishes did not include a service of any kind. He wanted to be as private in death as he was in life. I will be laying him to rest with a few close friends by my side. Many thanks to all who have supported me during this time. Lu would thank you himself, if he could.
To honor the man I love, please consider supporting our love of animals with donations to Erie Wildlife Rescue, the Farley Foundation or the Windsor-Es Humane Society.
