It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Lorne James Porterfield, age 77, who left us on February 18, 2025. Born on May 6, 1947, in Spalding, SK, Lorne was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose sense of humor, generosity, wisdom, and unwavering loyalty will be remembered by all who knew him.
Lorne spent his early years on his family farm, located five miles east of Lac Vert. After spending 7 years with the Calgary Police Force, he and his wife, Valerie, returned to the farm to raise their family. Lorne had many stories of working on the force and always loved returning to Calgary, their first home. Lorne and Valerie lived on the farm until 2018 when they moved into Naicam to be close to their friends.
A true family man, Lorne’s greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. His love for them knew no bounds. He took special pride these last 20 years in watching his grandsons grow and thrive. To his grandchildren, Grandpa was their greatest fan as he spent countless hours at rinks, ball diamonds, gymnasiums, camping or in back yards watching and playing with his grandsons. His legacy will live on in each of them.
Lorne was an avid curler, ball player, fisherman, hunter, and card player, spending countless hours with friends and family by his side. Whether it was casting a line into a quiet lake, trekking through the woods in search of a moose, or sharing a story after a game or match, Lorne found peace and happiness in the simple pleasures of life. His zest for life extended to every road trip, every card game, and every gathering. Lorne’s generous nature was seen in many areas of his life as he loved to volunteer in his community and would help anyone in need.
He is survived by his loving wife Valerie, daughters Janice (Jason) Pauls and Joanne Schoneck, grandchildren, Chase and Dallas Pauls and Hale and Nolan Schoneck, brothers-in-law Brian (Denise) McFarlane and Dennis (Lana) McFarlane, sister-in-law Geraldine (Raymond) McAuley, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Cecil and Elma Porterfield, sister and brother-in-law Barb and Don Wallace, infant sister Donna Porterfield and nephew Lyle Wallace.
A celebration of his life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lorne’s memory to The Salvation Army, a cause close to his heart.
“To the living I am gone,
To the sorrowful, I will never return,
To the angry, I was cheated,
But to the happy, I am at peace,
And to the faithful, I never left.
I cannot speak, but I can listen.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore gazing at the beautiful sea,
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity,
Remember me.
Remember me in your heart:
Your thoughts, and your memories,
Of the times we loved,
The times we cried,
The times we fought,
The times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will never have gone”
