Obituary of Lorna O’Brien (nee Keenleyside)
December 11, 1928 – April 4, 2025
With deep sadness, our family announces the death of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, on April 4, 2025. She lived her 96 years with an unwavering love and devotion to her family and faith. We are blessed to have had her guidance, strength and generous spirit in our lives.
Lorna was predeceased by her husband Francis (Frank) O’Brien (d. 1986), and her parents Francis and Hazel Keenleyside (nee Clost). She always spoke lovingly of life growing up with her siblings at the family homestead on Carling/Campbell Avenues, then a rural community on the outskirts of Ottawa with many extended family living nearby. Mom often said how lucky she felt for the happy home life with her parents and their example of hard work and patience. Love and marriage with Frank followed in 1948, and then a growing family of seven children with decades of happy family memories created at our home that Mom and Dad built at 261 Iroquois Rd. Mom was doubly happy that her cherished cottage became another family gathering place each summer and enjoyed across generations.
Lorna was a loving mother to Patrick O’Brien (Fay), Colleen O’Brien, Mary-Ann Grey (Geoffrey), Timothy O’Brien, Rod O’Brien, Kathleen O’Brien (Jacques Dagenais), and Rosemary O’Brien (Kenneth Johansen). Mom loved the arrival of more babies in the family and thrived in her role as a grandmother to Gregory O’Brien, predeceased, (Sarah), Shannon O’Brien, Lindsy Larizza (Michael), Brodie Montreuil (Martha Wawrykow), Francis Dagenais, Philippe Dagenais (Francesca Payette), Lily Dagenais, Marie-Rose Dagenais, Emily Johansen (Michael Palmer), and Kristen Johansen, and a great-grandmother to Serafina and Carmelina Larizza, and Orson and Sabine Montreuil.
She is survived by her siblings Terry Keenleyside, Judy Kitching (Alan) and Danny Keenleyside (Francine). She was predeceased by her brother, Ellwood Keenleyside and sister-in-law Marguerite, her brother Irving Keenleyside (Ruth), and her sister, Coral Paul and brother-in-law Harold. She was predeceased by her O’Brien family in-laws Margaret and Kenneth Shepard, Nancy and Bill Jandrew, Walter and Mabel O’Brien, and Carmen and Kenneth Birchall. She was a loved aunt and godmother to many nieces and nephews.
Lorna was a dedicated parishioner at Our Lady of Fatima Church for over 60 years. She enjoyed participating in various church activities, including the friendship and prayer she shared with her fellow members of the Catholic Women’s League. Memorial donations to Our Lady of Fatima Church, the Catholic Women’s League or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Our family would like to thank all the wonderful PSW staff at Stillwater Creek Retirement Residence for their care of Mom over the past 18 months. Thanks also to the many nurses and doctors at the Civic Hospital who cared for Mom over the past weeks, and compassionately assisted her and our family in her final days.
Visitation will be held at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa on Thursday, April 10, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 153 Woodroffe Ave., Ottawa on Friday, April 11, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Lunch reception to follow at Our Lady of Fatima Parish Hall. Interment to take place following the lunch reception at Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa.
