Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late Lloyd Unick, beloved husband of the late Pauline Unick, announce his passing at his home on February 28, 2025, at the age of 86 years.
Lloyd was born on November 21, 1938, to Nick and Dora (Rusnak) Unick on the family farm, southwest of Buchanan, SK. He attended Mammornitz School until grade 6, when he left school to work on the family farm with his older brother, Nicky. Additionally, he briefly worked for Andy Sebulsky on his farm, for CN Rail, and with Woppel Construction as well.
Lloyd enjoyed going to country dances and that is where he met the love of his life, Pauline Cheropita. They were married on November 2, 1960. Lloyd and Pauline continued to farm together for many years. In 1965, they were blessed with their first child, Leona, and in 1972, their family was complete with the addition of their son, Richard.
Lloyd and Pauline, alongside their children, expanded their farm with a grain and cattle mixed farming operation, to which Lloyd continued to do until his passing.
Lloyd loved sports and was a dedicated Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan. He watched almost every game, win or lose.
Most often, you could find Lloyd at the kitchen table with a deck of cards, ready to go! He taught so many friends and relatives how to play Durak and was often found smiling when he made someone other than himself deal.
Lloyd loved springtime. He could not wait to head out to the first local farm auctions and spend time visiting with neighbours. He also spent a lot of time by the barn watching the new baby calves running around the pens. In the fall, he looked forward to hauling the first load of grain home.
In 2012, Lloyd became ‘Gido’ with the birth of his first grandson, Kolton. He was so proud and had Kolton in the tractor with him as soon as he was old enough. Then, in 2016, Chance was born. Gido was always with those boys – forever making sure they were safe and not getting into trouble. He would be seen waving and smiling out the window when the school bus came to pick them up.
Our lives will never be the same. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our loving father and Gido. We will cherish all the memories and time we were fortunate to have together. Vichnaya Pamyat – May his memory be eternal.
Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, Nick and Dora; his loving wife, Pauline; and brothers, Peter, Nicky, Ernie, Larry, and Cecil in infancy.
He is survived by his daughter, Leona (Blair); son, Richard (Heidi); devoted grandsons, Kolton and Chance; brothers, Harry (Linda), Jerry, and David; sister, Olga (Mike); and in-laws, Ivan (Nancy), Shirley, Merle, and Sonia; as well as his nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2025, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Michael Faryna officiating and Zennovia Duch as cantor. Interment will follow in the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Sheho, SK. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Sheho, SK, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Lloyd Unick.
