Lisa Ann Cook, a feisty, strong, and tenacious force slipped away on Valentine’s Day at 98 years old. This beautiful woman, who never wanted to be old, and certainly never wanted to die, arrived at her inevitable moment. Her daughters, Gayle and Jill, are wondering what a life without Mom will be like.
Mom lived independently in our cherished house until she was 90; there was, to understate it slightly, some resistance to the move. Up until 2024, she enjoyed independent accommodations, but was exhorted to quit smoking at 92 or face a second eviction. She complied, and the family celebrated. 2024 was a hard year for her. She experienced increasing cognitive decline as well as the steady loss of her agility, mobility, and flexibility. Because she had practiced yoga for many years, and was a life time member of the YWCA, and loved her long walks, she was fit and agile until this last year.
Lisa, Mom, Ann, Grandma, and Great Grandma was the best baker and kept a freezer full of treats for all of us. Her house was immaculate, and she took great pride in keeping her yard as ship-shape as the rest on the street. Because she lived on her own for the last 40 + years, she was fiercely proud of her ability to manage all things in the house. When the lawn mower broke when she was 84, she reluctantly engaged a yard service. It also helped that her long-time neighbours and friends, Marna, Kim, and their sons, helped her immensely. We always knew she was safe while they were next door. They were such a gift to her and to us.
Mom loved clothes and shopping, and we loved going with her. We had fun at Polo Park for 4 decades. It is amazing that we never tired of it.
There are many who are remembering Lisa at this sad time. Michael, Jennifer, Jamie, and Daniel, aka the grandkids, who spent a lot of time with the whole family at the lake, at family dinners, magical Christmases, Thanksgivings, and Easters. We cherish these memories. Jim, son-in law (Jill’s husband), was the man who could do no wrong in her books. He did his best to keep it that way. Lisa was pre-deceased by our father, Ozzie, in 1981. We love you, Mom. Our world is changed forever.
