Leah’s Obituary
Leah Stang (nee Ferriss), life-long resident of Manning and area passed away peacefully at Manning Community Health Centre on February 10, 2025 at the age of 70 years.
Leah was born in the Manning Hospital on May 1, 1954. She was raised on the family farm near Deadwood, Alberta. As the youngest child and only girl, she was put to work at a young age, helping on the farm and began driving the truck in the field at 5 years of age as her brothers worked alongside her. She had a large extended family and enjoyed her time with her Simpson cousins throughout her childhood and lifetime. She attended the Deadwood School for her early years before transferring to Paul Rowe High School in Manning to finish her schooling.
Leah was an independent minded individual and after graduating from High School she moved to Peace River where she worked as a telephone operator for AGT, and it was during her final year of high school when she met her future husband. Leah married Bill Stang on June 8, 1974 in Manning, Alberta. By 1982, they had 3 children and had moved to the Stang family homestead on the top of Sunny Valley Hill overlooking the Peace River. It was at the family farm where Leah’s devotion as a mother and wife shone through. Countless hours were spent cooking, cleaning, gardening, testing grain, and driving grain truck, all while raising their children. Leah’s greatest joy was her family, she was dedicated to her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family and devoted her life to ensuring their happiness.
Leah was an excellent seamstress. As a young girl she first learned to sew clothing for her dolls, then began making clothes for herself. The designs of her high school grad dress and wedding dress were carefully chosen by Leah as she assisted her sister in law Donna who sewed them for her. When she became a mother, she continued the tradition, sewing many outfits for her daughter’s dolls and even sewing together dolls for her girls to enjoy. Farm life and children ensured her mending skills were never rusty and when her daughter needed a new dress for a special occasion and couldn’t find the “right one” in the store, she sewed not one but two for her. It brought Leah joy to sew baby blankets for her family and friends. As soon as she learned someone was expecting a child, she began planning their blanket. Over the years, Leah sewed hundreds of blankets, each uniquely crafted for her loved one.
Leah also had a love for blue jeans. It was her preferred choice for daily wear, strong, durable and comfortable, she made her first jean quilt for camping, and eventually made many more for her and Bill to enjoy as well as one for each of her children and grandchildren.
Raising their family in Manning, surrounded by family and friends, there was never a shortage of gatherings. Leah will forever be remembered for her delicious chocolate fudge, pumpkin pies and cabbage rolls.
Leah was enthralled by the world’s natural beauty. She loved exploring Canada with Bill, venturing to British Columbia countless times, along with every province and territory in the country. She loved being on the water, boating up and down the Peace River and many lakes throughout the province but one of her greatest joys was experiencing the Niagara Falls on “The Lady of the Mist”, describing the Falls as her “happy place”. Leah loved rainbows, sunsets, the northern lights, deer and most especially butterflies. A symbol of joy and beauty and often believed to be a messenger from beyond, Leah embraced and emboldened these qualities. Leah was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Her legacy of love, commitment, steadfast independence and passion for her beliefs will forever be remembered and honored.
She is predeceased by her parents Mathew and Edith (nee Simpson) Ferriss, brother Dennis Ferriss, father in law Frank Stang, brothers in law Douglas May, Bill Rycroft, Linus Becher and nephews Barrett Ferriss and Christopher Gardner.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years Bill Stang, their three children and spouses, Shane & Stacy (nee Keetch) Stang, Shannon (nee Stang) & Calvin Mah, Shawna (nee Stang) and Shane Nett, their 8 grandchildren Colby Stang, Tylan Stang, Matheson Mah, Cameron Mah, William Mah, Joshua Mah, Cory Nett, Haylee Nett, her mother in law Magdalen (nee Hartman) Stang, her brothers and spouses Vernon & Donna (nee Friesen) Ferriss, Lorne & Marianne (Fazikos) Ferriss, sisters in law, brothers in law, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
A Prayer Service will be held at St. James the Major Catholic Church in Manning, Alberta on February 15, 2025, at 7:00pm with light refreshments to follow.
Family and friends are invited to come dressed in jeans or comfy clothes.
A Celebration of Life and Graveside Service will be held in the Spring of 2025 where her ashes will be interred at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Notikewin, Alberta.
Leah’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Manning Community Health Centre for their excellent care and compassion.
If one so wishes, donations can be made to the Manning Palliative Care Association as expressions of sympathy.
