Lawrence Donald Snider
May 13, 1941 – January 2, 2025
Lawrence passed away in the evening hours of January 2, 2025, after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was 83 years old.
He was predeceased by his parents Joe Snider and Laura Snider (Schill). Brother Alvin and sister Violet Lucyk. In-laws Tom and Josie Ivey. Sister-in-laws Joan Borden and Marjory Wenaas. Brother-in-laws Tom Ivey Jr, Wayne Ivey and Orland Wenaas.
Lawrence is survived by his wife Hazel. Daughters Debra Wilkinson (Garry), Kelly Snider, Tammy Willerth (David) and Jamie Snider (Tom Hildebrand). Grand children Hunter Booth (Craig), Jagar Hollerbaum, Hailey Willerth Loney (Austin) and Ross Willerth. Brothers Mervyn (Myrna), Dwight (Gladys). Sister Delores Goldstone (Jim)and sister-in-law Betty Snider. Hazel’s family: Don Ivey, Al Ivey, Connie & Gerald Fisher and Bruce & Sherry Borden. Lawrence is also survived by many nieces and nephews, many of whom will have fond or funny memories of him while growing up.
Dad was born in Fort Qu’Appelle and never left the valley. He couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. He married Hazel Ivey on June 9, 1962, and quickly gained more family as he was now a part of the Ivey clan.
As a young man, he worked in construction for the Regal Brothers, helping build numerous buildings throughout Saskatchewan. Early in married life with two young daughters, he completed his certification and became a journeyman mechanic. He commuted weekly to Moose Jaw returning home on Fridays, often with a different vehicle and often with a surprise for Deb and Kel. The surprises ranged from donuts to gold fish to a new red wagon.
After completing his training he worked for Cockwill Motors and then Hertz Bus where he ran the shop for many years. He ran his own garage prior to his retirement at age 66. Dad loved his work and prided himself on being a good mechanic. His shop was meticulous. He worked hard and enjoyed a challenge. Lawrence could be counted on to be gruff and curmudgeonly. A trait that continued throughout his life. Those who knew him well had occasionally seen his softer side and knew him to be a concerned and thoughtful husband, Dad, Papa and friend.
He loved the outdoors, nature and loved to fish. Throughout his life he spent many days on the lakes, both in summer and winter. When the girls were young, summer holidays were spent camping and fishing in many Saskatchewan parks. In later years, he was happy to let his family do the driving, but still enjoyed many road trips. Lawrence lived with Parkinson’s Disease for many years and was able to live at home with mom until August, 2024. His increasing medical needs necessitated a move to long term care. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place in the summer of 2025.
The family expresses their thanks to the many staff at the Balcarres Integrated Care Centre for the excellent care and support our husband, Dad and family received as he completed his life journey. We are forever grateful.
