Lawrence Henkelman Obituary
If you look up the definition of tough, this man’s photo will be right there next to it. The definition states: one who is tough is able to endure hardship and pain, and strong enough to handle adverse conditions. That was Lawrence. Tough as nails, hardworking, and never one to complain about anything, ever. Not even after open heart surgery, not during a heart attack, not when his arm was crushed in a post pounder, not when he watched the love of his life take her last breaths 6 short months ago, never in that time that he navigated life on his own, and definitely not in his last days as his heart finally failed him.
He was the invincible man. The guy who defied death on more than one occasion. He was a farmer, a rancher of cows and ostriches, a carpenter, a teamster, a gardener, an ice fisherman, an upholsterer, a locksmith, a friend, a husband and partner to travel the world, a father and step father, a brother, an uncle, a grandpa and a ‘great’ papa Lawrence. He wore the same hair style for approximately 70 of his 83 years. He was stubborn but determined and accomplished. The neighbourhood mole trapper. He was the person you could call in a pinch, and the one we did often when we needed advice or needed an extra set of hands. He was always there, and he always put every effort into everything that he did.
We wish that we could say that his picture was next to the word invincible as well, but on February 18th, just before midnight it was proven that everyone has an expiry, even when we think it impossible. We know his soul is whole and that he’s happily reunited next to the love of his life.
Lawrence leaves behind a very large group of family and friends. Among the immediate family is his sister Lillian and brother Larry; brothers-in-law Mark (Shelly) Holben, Gene (Carol) Holben, and Fred Holben; sister-in-law Betty (Brian) Magennis; his step-daughter Donna (John) Wiancko; sons Marvin Henkelman and Kevin (Tammy) Henkelman; grandchildren Kaylee-Jo (Kenton) Fawcett, Casey Wiancko, Levi (Mackenzie) Henkelman, Shawney (Nelson) Schultz, Jordan Henkelman, Bret (Raven) Wiancko, Ryan (Megan) Hagemann, Lauren Henkelman, and honorary granddaughter Kallie Holben; great-granddaughters Alexis Wiancko, Ivy and Kate Fawcett, Everly, Kenzie and Madi Schultz, and Navy Henkelman.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that you please make a donation in Lawrence’s name to a charity of your choosing. As requested by Lawrence there will not be a formal public service but rather a small family gathering. As family, we thank all of you who have been a part of Lawrence’s life at any part in his journey, we encourage you to reach out to a family member if you have a fond memory to tell, and we thank the many aids, nurses and doctors who had a hand in his care.
He may be gone, and life will certainly be different without him here; but we find comfort knowing he is reunited with his loving wife MaryLou, his parents Helen and August, and his sister Laura. We’ll forever cherish the memories we’ve been left with and will smile knowing he’s looking down, reunited with his love.
