Laurie’s Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Laurie Jean March Smith, aged 64, on February 12, 2025 at the Valley Hospice, surrounded by her loving family. Even in the face of immense challenges, Laurie’s strength never wavered. She met every obstacle with grace, never allowing hardship to define her. Her unwavering positivity and ability to find joy in the smallest moments inspired everyone around her. Laurie was a partner, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was deeply loving, selfless and always there for her children, no matter the circumstances. She gave her time, energy and effort to make sure they had everything they needed, both emotionally and physically. She was the kind of person who put her children’s happiness first, often sacrificing her own comfort or desires to ensure theirs were met. It was the kind of unconditional love that created a strong, nurturing bond.
Born in Scarborough, Ontario on July 3, 1960, Laurie was a remarkable woman with a zest for life, a fascination with the world around her, and a heart full of compassion. Laurie’s love for children was immeasurable. At family gatherings, she could always be found holding the newest baby, offering comfort, warmth, and her signature cuddles. She was incredibly proud of her grandchildren, relishing every moment as they grew and discovered their own passions in life.
Laurie was predeceased by her beloved mother Margaret Jean (Sweet) Berringer, whom she deeply missed and often spoke of with fondness and her father Cyril Berringer, her mother-in-law and father-in-law Dorothy and Raymond Parsons. Also predeceased by several aunts. uncles, and cousins who were very special to Laurie. Laurie admired her mother’s strength—qualities Laurie herself embodied with grace and resilience throughout her life. After the sudden passing of her mother in 2004, Laurie spent much time with Auntie Helen and found comfort, love, and companionship during a time of profound loss.
Laurie is survived by her loving and dedicated partner, Craig Parsons. Their partnership was a testament to enduring love. Whether they were chasing Bruce Springsteen concerts, spending time on the beach or on one of their many road trips, she was always up for an adventure together creating lasting memories. Their love was never shaken.
She is also survived by daughter Natalie (Randal) and son Matthew (Jennifer). Laurie was Nana to grandsons Daylen (Adrianna) and Cooper, granddaughters Amelia, Ella and Claire and great granddaughter Ally. Laurie had a unique and special bond with each one of them. She especially looked forward to days when the family would visit, either after school or during special occasions. Her beloved brother Peter (Roxanne) with whom she shared a unique connection that only a brother and sister can understand. Also, brothers-in-law, John, Bruce (Shelley), Paul (Christine), Ray (Lori), sisters-in-law Melanie (Rick), Lynne (John), Sue (Mike), and several nieces and nephews. Her nieces Nicole, Chelsea, and Molly, along with their children, also held a special place in Auntie Laurie’s heart. Many cousins and their partners played a significant role in Laurie’s life, and she cherished the time spent with them.
Laurie was also known for her home, which she cherished and maintained with great pride. Her home was always immaculate, organized and filled with beautiful collections that reflected her appreciation for beauty and attention to detail.
Laurie had many special friends whom she loved dearly, including a special bond with Phyllis Smith. She created lasting memories with those that could join her to visit their winter home in Florida or other warm destinations. Together, they enjoyed the warm southern sunny breezes, hunting for antiques and pottery across the Annapolis Valley or the Amish lands of Pennsylvania, as well as visiting some of the beautiful spots across our Maritime provinces.
Laurie had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord, and she found great comfort in attending church services at the Middleton Baptist Church and MacGregor Baptist Church when away. Later, she continued to worship online when her health made it difficult to attend in person. Her faith and strength were a guiding light to those who knew her.
Laurie leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and curiosity, and will be deeply missed by her partner, children, grandchildren, great granddaughter, brother and all who had the privilege of knowing her. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Middleton Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Canadian Feed The Children, Canadian Cancer Society, Middleton Baptist Church or to a charity of choice.
Special thanks to all her care providers over the 22 years, including Dr Saxon, Dr MacKinnon, Dr Caldwell and Dr Fleetwood. Your care and compassion given to Laurie will always be remembered. Also, thank you to all the team at the Valley Hospice for compassionately guiding us in the difficult final days.
Laurie’s spirit and unwavering courage will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
