Laura was born on October 7, 1933, in Liliendaal, East coast Demerara, Guyana, to Laurie and Sybil Cumberbatch. She attended Kitty Methodist Primary School. At the end of her sixth grade (standard six) she was fortunate to receive a scholarship to attend High school. She attended Day Commercial High School for 2 years then transferred to the Guyanese College of Modern Education where she prepared for Overseas Exams (Oxford and Cambridge) and was successful. After graduation, she began her career teaching at Kitty Methodist School for a year before working with the Ministry of Education and later with the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Mines Division.
In 1959, Laura left the warm shores of Guyana, on a paid six-month holiday – at that time, one of the envied benefits of being a Civil Servant. She came to Toronto sponsored by her younger sister Joyce who had previously immigrated. Her first job was at Bell Canada as a Clerk Typist /Stenographer and later she was employed by Ontario Hydro (now Ontario Power Generation) for several rewarding years where she worked in the Administrative Services Department until her retirement in 1993 from the position of Office Support Services Supervisor. Laura was baptized into Christ, at her beloved church, the Toronto Church of Christ in 1993. She was a committed member of the congregation for over 30 years and was known for her warmth, hospitality, and exceptional culinary skills. She was an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan, and, in recent years, her sports interest expanded to include the Toronto Raptors. Laura also enjoyed creating wreaths and decorative items with dried or silk materials. Her generosity extended to many charities and organizations.
She is survived by her son, Kojo; daughter, Nicole; and grandson, Kalan. Laura is also survived by her sisters, Yvonne Cumberbatch, Joan McLean, Pamela Grannum, and Ingrid London, as well as her brother, Colin Cumberbatch. She leaves behind a large extended family, including 18 nieces and nephews and 25 great-nieces and nephews.
Laura is predeceased by her parents, Laurie, and Sybil; brothers, Telbert and Alvin; sisters, Linda, and Joyce; niece, Coretta; and nephews, Chris, and Timothy.
Laura’s kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
