Larry Gordon Folliott Obituary
Larry passed away on March 22, 2025 at the age of 81. He is mourned by his wife Gayle and his children Michael (and partner Nikole Herriott) and Kathryn (and husband Brian Gray). Grandad will be missed by his favourite granddaughter, Alexandra Gray. Larry is survived by his brother-in-law James Morris and predeceased by his brother Victor Folliott and sisters-in-law Cathy Folliott and Dianne Morris.
Anyone living in Richmond Hill in the 1950s and 1960s almost certainly met Larry, his brother Vic and their parents, Laurence and Nellie Folliott, at the family business, Summit View Gardens. The Summit was a much-loved local restaurant owned and operated by Laurence and Nellie, and it’s where Larry worked as a busboy, cook and dishwasher. Nellie’s wonderful pies, peanut butter cookies and other desserts were customer favourites, and no doubt contributed to Larry’s sweet tooth.
On a fateful (and busy) Mother’s Day Sunday in 1961, Gayle Morris arrived from Sandford for her first summer waitressing shift at the Summit. Larry was instantly smitten. They married in 1967. Their time together spanned more than 60 years.
After graduating from University of Toronto, Larry was hired by IBM. After 33 years he officially ‘retired’ but went on to serve as editor of IBM’s retiree newsletter, In Touch.
After moving to Stratford in 2008 Larry became a member of Friends of the Festival. He took a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction from his years of volunteering with the Friends, interacting with other volunteers, friends and patrons.
Larry always went the extra mile to help people, and to do the right thing. He was kind, considerate, hard-working, enthusiastic and fun. An engineer by training, he loved devising solutions to problems, and figuring out how things worked. All those product instruction manuals most people just glance at? He’d read them cover to cover (and keep them in a well-labelled file folder too).
He marked life’s milestones with celebrations and photos, making time for these special projects to let family and friends know how much they meant to him.
His many interests included golf, photography, Stratford’s theatre scene and Stratford Summer Music, and good food and wine enjoyed with Gayle and their many friends. He loved fast cars, travel, and music with a strong, thumping beat.
A mantra from his time at IBM – ‘AIE: Attitude is Everything’ – produced much eye-rolling from his kids in their teenage years. Later they realized their ‘AIE’ Dad was right all along.
Larry’s family wishes to thank the staff at McGarrell Place for the care and kindness they gave Larry during his months in residence at Windermere Way.
Family, friends and neighbours are invited to remember Larry at a visitation at Stratford Country Club on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, anytime between 2 – 5 p.m.
