Obituary
With his loving family and special friend by his side, Pastor Larry Gerald Soper was wondrously and peacefully ushered into the presence of God on February 11, 2025.
Larry was born on December 12, 1965 and was raised in Bonavista, NL. by Gerald and Lucretica Soper. As a young man he met and married the love of his life, Grace (who he so affectionately referred to as “baby girl.”) Together they built a beautiful life raising their most prized possessions, Shandi and Justin.
Larry gave his heart to the Lord in 1991 and answered the call to ministry in 1993 being the first person from Grace Pentecostal Church in Bonavista to attend Bible College. He attended Eastern Pentecostal Bible College in Peterborough, Ontario where he received three scholarships and graduated in 1996. Through the years Larry ministered in the following churches; Bishops Falls 1996-1997, Hant’s Harbour 1997-2000, Seldom/Fogo Island 2000-2002, King’s Point 2002-2006, Badger 2007-2012 and he finished his ministry at First Pentecostal Church in Corner Brook 2013-2025, where he had a special love for the congregation whom he called each person a friend. Also, the special relationships he had with the various staff he worked with through the years.
Larry was truly a man after God’s own heart. He loved the Bible and studied it diligently. His faith was unshakable and all throughout his ministry he was known for his balanced teaching of the Word of God. Larry was a Pastor, a teacher, a mentor, a confidante, and a friend to so many. In addition to ministry, Larry spent many years in the financial services sector, working with Primerica, a role he enjoyed immensely.
Family was everything to Larry. His children, and his grandchildren Isaiah, Aliah and Ariyah (who he only got to hold one time) were his life! And he loved Mya and Payton as his own grandchildren as well. Also, the love that he had for his brothers and sisters.
Larry was also known for his love of hockey, and particularly the Montreal Canadiens. He was like a kid in a candy store last year when he experienced his life-long dream, his first Habs game “at home” at the Bell Centre in Montreal. He was also a goal-tender when playing rec hockey, which he enjoyed. Larry loved life and he loved people. He was a man full to capacity with the unconditional love of Jesus – a love that knew no bounds.
With broken hearts and a lifetime of beautiful memories Larry leaves behind, with a legacy of love and faith, his loving wife Grace. Children; Shandi Card (Ryan) and Justin (Regan). Grandchildren – Isaiah, Aliah and Ariyah, Step grandchildren; Mya and Payton. Brother; Wilmour Soper. Sisters; June Hurley, Pamela Martin, Alvina Phillips (Ron) and Margaret Keel-Abbott. Brothers-in-law; David Harris (Marife) and Rodney Harris and a large circle of family, and friends and Pastoral colleagues.
Larry is predeceased by his loving parents; Gerald and Lucretia Soper. Brother; Hubert Russell (Mary). Brothers-in-law; Patrick Hurley, Wilson Keel, Brendan Martin and Maxwell Abbott. Father-in-law; Reginald Harris. Mother-in-law Joan Cooper and brothers-in-law Reginald Harris Jr. and Allan Harris.
The family would like to send sincere gratitude to all who gave Larry the utmost special care in his most recent journey at Central Health Grand Falls-Windsor, Eastern Health at the Health Sciences Centre and at the Ottawa Heart Institute. Larry’s vision for life and for the church was to love God Completely, Ourselves Correctly, and Our Neighbours compassionately!
There will be a visitation held at First Pentecostal Church, 58 Premier Drive Corner Brook on Saturday February 15th 2025 from the hours of 2-4PM and 7-9PM from where the funeral service will take place on Sunday February 16th 2025 at 2PM with Pastor Robert H. Paddock and Pastor Jamie Payne officiating. Interment to follow at Grace Pentecostal Cemetery in Bonavista NL. on Tuesday February 18th at 2PM. No flowers by request. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation in Larry’s honour can be made to First Pentecostal Church, Premier Drive, Corner Brook NL. in person or via etransfer to fpcdonor@gmail.com
