Obituary of Kuruganti Venkata Lakshmi Narasimha Sastry
Kuruganti Venkata Lakshmi Narasimha Sastry (‘Sastry’) passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 24, 2025 at Hospice House Fredericton.
Sastry was born on January 12 (according to Indian astrology, Jan 19th) 1935 in Godavarru, Andhra Pradesh, India about 80 miles away from the village of Prodduvaka, his childhood home. He was the eldest of 10 children and lived a rich life with his 7 brothers and 2 sisters in Prodduvaka, enjoying village life. Sastry graduated from high school when he was just 13 years old. He received his BSc (Physics) from Hindu College in Masulipatnam. He then continued his education 1200 miles away and completed his MSc in Physics at Benares Hindu University where he received a first rank in spectroscopy. He continued with his PhD in physics in 1955 at Aligarh Muslim university where he studied with Dr. Venkateswarlu. Sastry married Sita Lakshmi Sistla in 1958. After submitting his PhD thesis, one of his external examiners, Dr. Walter Gordy, recruited him for post-doctoral studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and Sastry and Sita began their journey to North America. They arrived in Durham, North Carolina in 1960 and stayed until 1963. They arrived at a time of significant change in the United States and have fond memories of their time there. In 1963, Sastry pursued a second post- doctoral position at Rice University in Houston, Texas and worked with Dr. Bob Curl. In 1964, Sastry joined the Physics department at the University of New Brunswick as an Assistant Professor. He took a leave of absence in1968 and returned to India to work at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India. He returned to Fredericton and UNB in 1970 and eventually retired as a Professor in 1995.
Sastry loved the beauty of the Maritimes and always said he lived in a beautiful part of the world. He had a great love of travel and he and Sita travelled the world seeing many places in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan and India. They extensively explored the Atlantic provinces over the last 50+ years and loved the scenery and the people they met along the way. Sastry loved photography and his travels provided many opportunities for him to capture incredible scenery. Many of his photos are displayed in the homes of friends and family.
Sastry loved electronics and was always tinkering with new technology. He loved teaching and tutored innumerable students (including his children’s friends). His house was filled with various projects under construction, something that fascinated his grandchildren. He was a good husband, father, brother and well-loved and fun grandfather. He was an avid gardener, a voracious reader and had a great love of music, especially South Indian Carnatic music. He will be missed for his sense of humour which was active till the end. He lived life to the fullest and was always willing to help others.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sita Lakshmi, his three children, Uma, Ashok and Usha (Boris Allard); three grandchildren, Maia, Joshua and Laurent; four brothers, a sister and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Appaiah Sastry and Lalithamba, he was predeceased by three brothers, and a sister.
Sincere gratitude is extended by the family to Dr. Mohammad Khaleduzzaman at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital (DECH), Dr. Sainz, Bridget Bannister, Abby Bannister, the staff of 4NW and 4NE of the DECH and the staff of Hospice House who filled his last few days with comfort and kindness.
