Kenneth William Courtenay was born April 5, 1928 in Windsor, Ontario, the eldest son of six children to Thomas Greer Courtenay and May Elizabeth (York). He was raised on the Southeast coast of England and returned to Windsor in August 1940 when his family was evacuated during the Battle of Britain. With nine RAF fighter bases stationed within 50 miles of his home, flying became an obsession.
Kenneth, an active supporter of flight training in Canada died in Kingston, Ontario at his home on January 2, 2025. He was 96. He served as a director of the Windsor Flying Club through the 1950’s as Western Ontario’s Zone Director for the Royal Canadian Flying Clubs Association (RCFCA) in 1959 and as Chairman of the Windsor Detroit International Air Show to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Flight in Canada.
He leaves his wife, Caroline Anne (St. Martin) whose gentle glow was the light he followed for 49 years; children from his first marriage to the late Jacqueline Joan (Strong), Leslie Anne Tovell (late Brian), Kenneth William Courtenay and Diane Marie Warren (Kevin). Caroline’s son, Christopher Alan St. Martin (Julia), Senior Chief, United States Coastguard suffered a service related death in retirement on March 13, 2022: Warren grandchildren; Scott (Kerri), Jarret, Kyle (Janay): Tovell grandchildren; Jordan (Alexis), Trevor (Christine), Bethany Tovell Martin (Michael). St. Martin grandchildren; Nicole Bankston (Bryson), Joshua (Macy); Warren great-grandchildren; Layne, Maximus, Landon and Bennett. Tovell great-grandchildren; Rhys, Grier, Nolan, Jocelyn, Genevieve and Mikayla; St. Martin great-grandchild; Emery; brother, Vincent Courtenay (Makye).
There will be Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 1111 Taylor Kidd Blvd, Kingston. Following the mass we will be heading to Cataraqui Cemetery for inurnment and then the family will be welcoming guests for a reception at James Reid Funeral Home Reception Centre, 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston. Please enter through the rear doors into the Reception Centre. If desired, memorial donations can be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church or to the Canadian Red Cross.
