The Hutchinson Family, in a spirit of reflection and gratitude for the love and joy he brought to our lives in his 80 years, announce the passing of our husband, father, brother, and friend, Ken Hutchinson. While his passing was unexpected, we are thankful that it was peaceful and that his family was able to spend his final day at his side. The love that surrounded his final moments was so impactful that we will all tap into it in the difficult moments.
Ken was born in Toronto on August 12, 1944, and lived there until the age of five before moving with his family to Telfordville, Alberta, where he was raised. He graduated from Thorsby High School and, after spending a year in Scotland with his family, enrolled at the University of Alberta. He earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree.
After a brief career with an accounting firm in Edmonton, Ken got a job with the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway and moved the family to Whitehorse. After a few years he obtained his certification as an accountant and was hired by the federal government. His work took him to Indigenous communities across the Yukon, where he played a key role in helping them establish and manage their own financial systems. He was dedicated to training local community members in accounting practices, empowering them with the skills to handle their own finances. This work was emblematic of Ken’s desire to be of service to others in so many aspects of his life. He did this for many years prior to being transferred to Ottawa to work on land claims policy until his retirement.
Ken was always an active member of his community, joining various clubs and organizations wherever he lived. He had a lifelong passion for photography and was involved in photography clubs in multiple cities. While living in Whitehorse, he also participated in a local drama society, working backstage building props to support
productions. His involvement extended to his family as well—he was a dedicated supporter of his daughter, and granddaughter’s, own passions. Taking on the roles of cheerleader, chaperone, volunteer, and supporter in a variety of their own activities.
Ken was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying any opportunity to camp out in the bush or jump into a canoe to go fishing or berry picking. His passion for nature merged with his love of photography, which began in his childhood and continued throughout his life. He had a quiet, introspective, and contemplative approach to life. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, it was usually something you’d want to listen to and reflect on. Even though he was quiet, his sense of humour always shone through. He was a practical joker and delighted in executing a well-planned prank! In his retirement, Ken remained a committed community builder, donating his time and money to causes very important to him. He was a congregant and donor at the St. Albert United Church. His faith and belief in the United Church’s affirming, progressive, and welcoming mandate was evident in the way he lived his life. Even in the weeks leading up to his passing, he continued to volunteer for an organization called Drive Happiness, where he would volunteer to drive seniors to their appointments and errands.
Ken is survived by his wife Kathy, daughter Jennifer, stepchildren Daniel and Kayla, and granddaughter Suzannah, as well as his brother Rob, sister Beth, and nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his first wife Jean.
His passing will be felt by so many in the community whom he touched with his volunteerism and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
Ken has asked that, rather than lamenting his passing, all who knew him instead celebrate his life and take comfort and joy in the wonderful memories we have of him. A memorial service will be planned for May 24 at 1:00 pm at the St. Albert United Church, 20 Green Grove Dr, St. Albert, AB.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Funeral Home.
