Obituary of Kathleen Upton
It is with great sadness, but in appreciation of a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Kay Upton which occurred from The Church of St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home on Monday, January 6, 2025.
Kathleen (Kay) Smith Upton was born on April 26, 1925, in Wokingham, England to the late Herbert and Alice Smith. She married a Canadian soldier, the late Donald Upton on June 13, 1944, in England. Don was a medic in the Canadian army. Kay was a proud “war bride” and was one of the last surviving members of that association in Saint John, NB.
Kay is survived by her daughter, Margaret (Carl) of Surrey, BC; daughter-in-law, Joyce (David) of Saint John, NB; grandchildren Shawn, Carolyn, Scott and Dale; as well as several great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son, David, as well as brother, Frank, and sisters, Beryl and Margaret.
Kay spent most of her married life in Campbellton, NB, where she was employed by Eaton’s. In her latter years she lived as a widow in Saint John. A lifelong Anglican, she was very active in the churches in both communities. As a member of Church of the Good Shepherd in Saint John West, and the parish Altar Guild thereof, she was responsible for the flowers for Sunday worship. She was also a member of Anglican Church Women (ACW).
Kay was fiercely independent and lived in her own apartment until she was 98. Though she carefully guarded her independence she was always quick to make friends and was scrupulously loyal. Her last apartment was at Hillcrest Village where she found great joy in being part of the community there.
She was well known for her great skill at all kinds of needlework.
While at Hillcrest, she was a member of the knitting club which prepared mittens and scarves, etc, for needy children.
For the past one and a half years she received wonderful care at the St. John and Saint Stephen Nursing Home where she made more friends.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506-634-7424). Visitation will take place on Friday, January 10, 2025, from 2:00 – 4:00 & 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held from The Church of The Good Shepherd on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place in Campbellton Rural Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Kay may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be placed at www.BrenansFH.com
