Obituary of Kathleen Ann Hildebrand
Kathleen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Helen and Robert Sturgeon, and raised by Helen and Allen Bond. Kay attended school in Portage La Prairie and Medicine Hat, Alberta. She excelled at sports, especially in basketball, and academics.
Kathleen relocated in 1954 to Redcliff, where on an off chance she met her prince charming, Clarence Hildebrand. Kay was visiting her friend Agnes (who happened to be Clarence’s stepsister) and Clarence was visiting his folks. While there, he caught a glimpse of the young, beautiful, redhead, and commented to his sister, “Hey, I should ask her out!” To which Agnes replied, “She wouldn’t go out with you.” Well, challenge accepted!!!! Clarence called and asked Kay out, and of course she said yes! And as the saying goes, “the rest is history,” or in their case, the beginning of a long life together.
Kay and Clarence were married December 22nd, 1956, and moved back to Medicine Hat. Shortly after, they were blessed with 4 children; 3 sons and 1 daughter; Kelly (Sherry), Brenda (Larry), David (Colette) and Stacy (Adena). The happy family stayed in Medicine Hat until they decided to pack up and head to Fort St. John, BC. Clarence had a job with Ford, and Kay started her career at Sears in 1973. She worked her way up from bookkeeper to assistant manager, and in a short period was promoted to manager of Sears. She held that position from 1985 to 1993 when she decided to retire – woot woot!!
Kay had many interests and hobbies over the years, including baseball, bowling, gardening, cross stitch, crocheting, and puzzles, but mostly camping and card games. Oh, the card games!!!! She also loved to have her family over for every holiday; no birthday or anniversary went uncelebrated. Whether it was a big turkey dinner or BBQ, no one ever felt left out.
They took many trips over the years but some of the most memorable were the surprise paid trip to Hawaii from the 4 kids for their 25th anniversary, as well as a trip to Las Vegas for the renewal of their wedding vows for their 50th anniversary, complete with Elvis. Such great memories! Kay and Clarence were happily married for 68 years and together for 70 years. The love they shared is a true dedication to life, they deserve trophies!
Over the 70 years of marriage, they have added 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren with 1 on the way; forever known as GMA and GPA, grandma and grandpa, great grandma and great grandpa. Kay leaves behind her loving husband Clarence, and her 2 sisters Allana Minor and Marrianne (Alton) Sulz. Kay was predeceased by her parents and her granddaughter-in-law Cassie Wigton.
Special thanks to her daughter Brenda Wigton and her granddaughter Alicia (AJ) Wigton, son Dave and Colette, and son Kelly and Sherry who spent countless hours helping with whatever was needed during Kathleen’s illness both at home and in the hospital. Thank you to all other family members for their visits, phone calls, words of encouragement, love, and hugs.
Finally, thank you to Northern Health for the wonderful, compassionate care of Kay. Thank you, Dr. Salah Aburahess, and a special thank you to Keri Giesbrecht who went above and beyond in caring for Kay.
There are no words to express how much Kay will be missed by us all. You will be forever in our hearts, we love you!!!
