RUNIONS, Kathleen (Kay) Margorie
(nee Canning)
Sept. 29, 1933 – February 18, 2025
Passed away in her 92nd year. The only child of Dow Vernon Canning and Ethel (Heron) Canning.
After completing high school at Peterborough CVI, Kay attended the University of Guelph, graduating
with a BHSc degree in Clothing and Textiles.
In 1957, Kay and fellow Guelph alumni, James Allan Runions (OAC 55) married in Peterborough, and lived happily together for 60 years until James passing in 2017.
After the wedding the couple moved to Toronto where Kay worked as a lab assistant and was the bread winner, while James completed his studies at Osgood Hall.
The couple eventually settled in Guelph, and welcomed three children: Diane, Phillip and Stephen.
As was her nature, she made many connections and contributions within the Guelph community. For 19 years, she worked at the University Application Centre processing admissions.
The couple was particularly active in the Guelph Rotary Club, and participated in numerous fundraisers, charitable work, and international exchanges.
They were active members of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where Kay taught Sunday school and volunteered at Crieff Camp.
Kay loved music. Music was always playing in her home and she sang in several choirs. She was also an avid reader, joining in several book clubs. As a regular bridge player, Kay preferred the socializing over the strategizing.
She was the cool grandmother, always warm, welcoming and positive. What she liked best was being with family and friends.
She will be sorely missed but not forgotten; by her children Diane (Michael Goetz), Phillip (Connie Putt), Stephen (Karen Vonnegut), her grandchildren, Amelia and Jared, Daniel (Liza Khalyapina) and Jake, Emersyn and Tatum, as well as by her many friends.
A funeral service will be held in the sanctuary at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 161 Norfolk St., Guelph, on April 13 at 1:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Life reception in the church parlor.
