Katherine Ruth Turner
1930-2024
It is with our deepest
sorrow that we inform you of the death of our mother, Katherine Ruth
Turneron December 19th, 2024 in the Valley Regional Hospital,
Kentville.
Kaye was born on April
8, 1930 in Centre Rawdon, Hants County to parents Hattie (nee Nowlan)
and Leonard Hill.Her mother Hattie passed away when Kaye was 11 months
old and she was raised by herpaternal grandmother, Cynthaline Anthony
Hill.
Kaye was an
intelligent and gifted individual who was selected at the age of 16 to
teach Grades Primary to 10 in Centre Rawdon’s one-room
school. Shestudied piano for many years and was an
accomplishedpianist. At nineteen, she married Donald Turner and moved
to Kentville. She was divorced in 1973 and several years later, she
met her beloved Dean Rafuse and they were eventually engaged to be
married.Her time with Dean was the happiest of her life. Sadly, Dean
passed in 1998.
Kaye attended Mack
Business College in the 1970’s and worked as Dr. Gary
Condon’s dental assistant for many years.She was a member of
Bethany Memorial Baptist Church, Aldershot and the Bethany Memorial
Baptist Church Ladies’ Auxiliary. She was also a
member of the Kentville Hobby Crafters Club where she excelled at tole
painting and other crafts. Kaye found endless joy in her clothes,
reading, music, shopping and socializing at Frenchy’s, and
watching golf and romantic movies. In her final summer, she
cherished daytrips with daughter Wendy to various towns and beaches in
Southwestern Nova Scotia and going for ice cream at Nichol’s
Farm Market and Foote’s Farm Market. She dreamed
of visiting her ancestral homes of Scotland and Ireland; and she
always wanted to tour Italy’s Tuscany Valley.
Our mother was known
for her strength and resilience, and she faced life’s
challenges with unwavering determination and grace.Kaye was proud of
her children’s academic and career achievements and deserves
much credit for instilling in them a passion for reading and life-long
learning. She was blessed to have many loving and supportive
friends who unfortunately passed in the last three decades. They
include Fran Bucci, Fran Hawkins, Elmore Kenney, Kit Cann, Eva Turner,
Georgina Turner, Joan Martin, Reverend Freeman Fenerty, Rosalie and
Don Rafuse, Doris Rogers, Betty and George Stevens, Irene Wallace,
Sheila Burke, Jenny Barkhouse, Joyce Fisher, Lorna Aalders and Betty
Boylan.
Kaye is survived by
her children: Christopher (Ottawa, Ontario), Richard (Edmonton,
Alberta), Wendy (Kentville) and Kathy (Kootenay Bay, B.C.); and her
brother, Douglas Hill (Halifax) and sister Marjorie MacKenzie
(Halifax). She also leaves behind her special friends: Susan and Billy
C., Coral and her family,Corinne, Debbie, Yvonne, Dale, Rhona, Donna
and Danny, Heather, Little William and Georgina. Kaye was predeceased
by her parents Hattie and Leonard Hill, grandmother Cynthaline Hill
and sister, Hazel McLellan.
Cremation has taken
place and there will be no visitation, by request. A service to honour
Kaye’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, donations in Kaye’s memory may be made to: Valley
After the Bell School Food Program. Arrangements have been entrusted
to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
