Kate McKay Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Kate Florence McKay on February 16th, 2025 at the age of 86.
Kate will be missed by her husband, Vern McKay and three children, Shannon (Harold), Jim (Julie-Ann) and Leanne (Morley) as well as her grandchildren, Geoff, Joey, Kylie, Kristina and great grandchildren Meika and Jayda. She will also be remembered by her sisters Joyce, Joan, Carolynn (Orest) and Glenda and her brother Gerald (Darlene).
Kate was born in the small community of Birch River, Manitoba. Kate loved growing up on the farm and would spend many hours telling her family stories about living there with her parents and ten brothers and sisters. Kate moved to Flin Flon to work at the Royal Bank when she first left home. It was here she discovered her love of canoeing, joining a local team and competing in many competitions. After she was married, she also enjoyed the opportunity to experience living in many places in Canada, the US, Germany and Trinidad with her young family, and she had many stories to tell of her experiences during those years. In 1973, Kate and Vern decided to move back to Mafeking to raise their family. Kate enjoyed being an active part of the community, helping with community fundraising events, the local rodeo and of course, bingos. She was one of the representatives for the Mafeking and Area Metis local and was proud to receive her Metis sash after she turned 70. Of course, Kate loved sharing stories of these times, because Kate always loved sharing her stories with her family.
Kate favourite past times included cross country skiing, canoeing, berry picking, working in her garden and knitting. More than anything she loved to cook. She had cooked in drilling camps and lodges and whenever her family was coming to visit took great pleasure on planning the menu, always remembering everyone’s favourite dishes. She could whip up an amazing batch of bread in no time! Kate also loved her pets and always took excellent care of them as she considered them part of her family. Her dogs would get faithfully walked every day, no matter the weather.
Kate was predeceased by her parents James and Mary; sisters Gayle, Grace and Melba; and brothers Jim and Lyle.
In keeping with Kate’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held at this time.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to an Humane Society of One’s Choice.
