Obituary for
Kata Kovačević (née Leko)
September 15, 1936 – March 8, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, and friend, Kata Kovačević (née Leko), who departed this life surrounded by love and cherished memories.
Kata was born on September 15, 1936, in Donji Mamići, Grude municipality, Bosnia and Herzegovina, into a large and loving family with nine siblings. In 1958, she married her husband, Milić Kovačević, and together they built a life full of love, dedication, and resilience. In 1960, they moved to Sarajevo, where they raised their two sons, Zoran (born in 1960) and Predrag (born in 1962).
A devoted mother, Kata put her career on hold for 12 years to care for her young sons and nurture the values that would guide them throughout their lives. When she returned to work as an accountant in 1975, she excelled through her meticulous nature, honesty, and professionalism, earning the admiration and respect of her colleagues.
Kata was not only a role model but also the heart of the family. Her talent in the kitchen brought warmth and joy to every celebration, as her meals were prepared with love and meticulous care. Despite the challenges she faced—especially during her husband’s frequent work-related absences—Kata demonstrated strength and independence, instilling these qualities in her children.
In 1992, as conflict enveloped Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kata and her family made the difficult decision to move to Serbia for safety. In 1997, she courageously embarked on a new chapter, joining her son Predrag in Canada, where she lived until her passing. Though her older son, Zoran, settled in Holland, the bond between them remained strong, with frequent visits and unwavering connection.
Kata’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of her family and friends. Her unwavering devotion, wisdom, and the values she imparted will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her. She is survived by her sons, Zoran and Predrag, and the family and friends who were fortunate to know her.
Funeral Liturgy will be held Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 1 p.m. with viewing and visitation one hour prior at Park Memorial Reception Centre, 11015 – 101 Street, Edmonton.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
