Karen Allen
Allen, Karen Joan – Age 63, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, January 1, 2025, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Belleville, ON, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Shirley (Hutcheon) Gilroy.
Karen faced a lot of obstacles in her life but was always an upbeat person who enjoyed being with people, playing games (particularly cards), and watching game shows. She was independent and able to negotiate the Halifax bus system to get around on her own. She was involved with Special Olympics, did volunteer work with the Epilepsy Association of the Maritimes, and worked for many years at Lake City Works in Dartmouth. She was a kind and gentle soul and will be sadly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.
She is survived by sister, Barbara Gilroy, Hunter River, PEI; brother, Layton (Melanie) Gilroy, Truro, NS; nephew, Tristan (Alexa) Dickson, Hunter River, PEI and niece, Madeline (Sam) Dickson, Cornwall, PEI; uncles, Albert and Bruce Hutcheon, and aunt, Jean Hutcheon (all of Ontario); aunt, Marie Gilroy, Rodney, NS; and many cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Graham Allen.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Epilepsy Association of the Maritimes.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 9th at 1pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, NS. Eileen Corah officiating. Online condolences are available at www.ColchesterCommunity.com.
