We are heartbroken to inform you of the passing of our beloved aunt, Ms. Kamaladevi Aloysius nee Thambyayah, on March 6, 2025 in Montreal, Canada
She was the second daughter of the late James Ayampillai Thambyayah (Pungudutivu, Avarangal) and the late Rasammah Thambyayah (Pointpedro, Nallur). She was the devoted sister of the late Sushila Jayaratnam (Thambyayah) and the late Indradevi Thambyayah (Montreal). She was the favorite sister in-law of the late Alagiah Victor Jayaratnam (Sushila) and the beloved Aunt of Kalyani Paramanantham (UK), Tharani (Tara) Jayaratnam (USA) and Sumanthini (Suma) Jayaratnam (USA). Kamala was the loving Aunt-in-law of Kanahendran Paramanantham (UK) and Muhammed Ilyas Hassan (USA) and the doting grand aunt of Kovalan, Kokila and Rehaan.
Kamala graduated from SIET College, University of Madras in Chennai, India with a 1st Class BSc honors degree in Chemistry. She held the positions of Supervisor and Chief Supervisor at the Ceylon Telecommunications Department both in Jaffna and in Colombo. She was one of two, and the only one from Jaffna to be sent to Australia in 1972 on a Commonwealth Scholarship to study and prepare her department for the advent of digital technology where she visited Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. After caring for her mother, she left Jaffna to teach in Nigeria in 1980 until 1986. She resided in Madras, India until 1992 with Sushila’s family when she left with her nieces to Botswana and onwards via London to Toronto, Canada. In Toronto, she enjoyed volunteering at the community center and participating in church activities and integrating into the Tamil community.
She moved to Montreal, Canada in November 1999 to be near her sister Indra and lived in Cote Des Neiges until her passing. In Montreal, she served as an elder to the Tamil community who could lend an ear to those in need and to those who sought guidance. She attended Cote Des Neiges Presbyterian Church and Pastor Elmo’s Church regularly until the pandemic.
Kamala was loved by her nieces and their families and all of the friends she has made during the course of her long life. She will always remain in our hearts forever.
