Obituary of Juanita Ashcroft
Juanita Anne Ashcroft (nee Munson), passed peacefully after a short illness at the age of 96 with family by her side at Golden Dawn Senior Citizen Home in Lion’s Head on Tuesday night February 24th, 2025.
Cherished Mom of Darlene, Morris, Debbie, Dona, MaryDale and Brenda
Much loved Grandma of Troy (Michelle), Derek (Jamie), Nicole (Tyler), Douglas, Dawn (Rob), Morris Jr., Michael baa, Juanita/Winnie, Brady (Kate), Jordan (Bailey) and Evan (Taylor). Great grandma of 16. Also survived by 3 nieces living in the U.S., Kimberly, Pamela and Dawn.
Predeceased by husband Douglas, brother Harry, sister-in-law Cynthia, and parents Harry and Helen Munson.
Mom was born in Bronxville, New York, spent her high school years in Clinton Connecticut, then moved to St. Petersburg Florida where she met a sailor from Canada.
As a teenager, she never imagined that she would become a farmer’s wife in Canada and raising 6 children, but she loved the farming life. No running water – hauling it from the creek, or melting snow, cooking on a wood stove, every day baking, spring floods, looking after the cattle, riding her horse, feeding farm hands, sewing clothes, tending to the huge garden, banty roosters, her Model A ford, driving the farm truck, winter storms on the flats, skating in the fields…
She loved being a Mom. We were much loved and always supported. She taught us so many life lessons – no one was better than anyone else, stand up for what you believe in, root for the underdog, always lend a hand, laugh at yourself but never laugh at others, your community is family.
She loved being a grandma and great-grandma. If the grandkids wanted ice cream for breakfast, they could have it because Mom knew that they were getting good meals at home. Grandkids were there to have fun with.
She loved her American family, and missed them terribly, but between family trips to Connecticut, and the Munson family trips to Canada, she was able to stay close with them, and we also got to know and love them as part of our family. Her Mom died at a young age, but her father survived into his 90s. She was very close to her high-school friends and kept in regular touch with them. She always attended her “Morgan High” school reunions every five years.
She loved her community, and she loved Canada. Even though she was born and raised in the U.S.A., few people celebrated Canada the way she did. Mom was a transplanted Yankee who loved Canada deeply.
She was a charter member of the Lioness Club. Hard work and lots of laughs. Great friends.
She loved curling – playing (so many good times and treasured friendships), then watching it on tv when she was no longer able to play. She loved the Blue Jays – taking the boys to the games, and watching games on tv.
Farmer, Assistant Clerk, Clerk-Treasurer, owner of The Cat’s Meow, and The Cat’s Pajamas. Which did she like best? She loved them all. She loved life and always made the best of it.
Foamy freshy, ice cream, country drives and picnic suppers at the beach. Red Cross Beach Parties (and chopping garbage bags full of cabbage), Limberlost, party lines, rummoli, Norman Rockwell, farm-hand meals at Sandy Beach, MaryDale’s restaurant where she was looked after so very well, scaring kids at Halloween, Easter egg hunts, picking the kids up from a dance at the school in the farm truck (just to embarrass them), doing donuts in her car in front of the school, doing the Charleson dance, scooting around town on her Moped…
Mom loved to travel, and saw most of North America, but her favourite place was Lion’s Head. She hated flying, but could do it if she had to (they had to carry her off the plane when it arrived in London, England). Mom’s sense of adventure often led us down the roads less travelled. That’s how we got to see some things that we would not have otherwise seen.
Mom received several awards for community service. She was always grateful and rarely complained. She loved to make people laugh, and was quick with compliments. Her wit and humour stayed with her until the end.
She was our rock, our glue, our mentor and our biggest cheerleader.
Thank you to the community that she loved so much, and who gave her so much love in return.
Thank you to the staff at the Lion’s Head Hospital. She was always treated with excellent care and so much kindness whether it was for an emergency visit, or if she had been admitted for a longer stay.
Thank you to the Golden Dawn staff who provided excellent loving care during Mom’s time there. She often made the staff laugh with her antics. Mom was always treated with so much kindness while she was a resident, but especially during her final days. The staff provided Mom (and us) with amazing care, support and compassion in spite of exceptionally challenging circumstances. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful care in the community, and we are extremely grateful to everyone.
Let us all count our blessings. Mom counted hers every day.
A private family funeral service will be conducted at the GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, Wiarton. A public Celebration of Life will be held in the spring the details of which will be posted when available. Interment Eastnor Cemetery, Lion’s Head. Expressions of remembrance to Lion’s Head Hospital c/o Bruce Peninsula Hospitals Foundation or Golden Dawn Senior Citizen Home would be greatly appreciated.
