With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our precious mother, Joyce Irene Campbell (née MacKenzie) on February 24, 2025 at the age of 91.
Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia to the late Roderick MacKenzie and Eva (Samskar) MacKenzie, Joy was predeceased by her infant daughter Mary, husband of 68 years John Hugh, brothers Victor and Roderick, sister Donna (MacKenzie) MacNeil and brother-in-law John Roussel, and in-laws: Alec and Catherine (née MacPhearson) Campbell, Sister Mary Campbell, Joe and Leone Campbell and George Campbell.
Devoted & compassionate mother of Doreen Campbell, Jim (Susan) Campbell, Deanne (Mark) Babcock, Kathryn (Hemsley) Henry, Paul Campbell, Linnea (Colin) Cameron, Rod (Robin Farley) Campbell, Mary-Jo Campbell, Karen (Steve) Foster and Ian Campbell. Her circle of love expanded effortlessly to all 22 grandchildren and 4 precious great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her dear sister, Deanne Roussel (London), brother-in-law Jerry MacNeil (Winnipeg), sister-in-law Joan Campbell (Sydney), sister-in-law Dorothy MacKenzie (Sydney), and so many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Joyce devoted her entire life to our family. She was always available to anyone in need, at the drop of a hat. She and John were a tight-knit team, with a pot of tea on the stove, baked goods on the counter and a warm welcome for anyone who appeared on their doorstep. Her calm, peaceful, yet strong demeanour combined to offer warm solace to family and friends alike. Summers were filled with picnics in Springbank Park, then poolside visits with relatives, friends and neighbours, and if time permitted, annual marathon road trips to her beloved Cape Breton. Joy revelled in card games with neighbours, retreats and crafting with her dear friends and attending myriad school concerts or sports events to watch her grandchildren. Babies were one of her greatest loves. She melted into their presence while they snuggled in her arms. Joy personified patience, love, gentleness and compassion throughout her life. We are all so blessed to have called her Mom and will continue to hold her close in our hearts.
Joyce’s family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staff at McCormick Home who cared for her during her years in residence, with such compassion and kindness.
At Joyce’s request, a private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Save a Family Plan at St. Peters Seminary info@safp.org, McCormick Care Foundation www.mccormickcarefoundation.ca , or a charity of your choice.
